I'm interested in the concept of blending the best parts of an image, but I'm not convinced the result of HDR is a pleasing image. It seems most of the time they look very muddy, lack contrast, create unwanted halos, or all three. Is it possible that HDR should be more of a selective thing than an automated process? I often bracket my shots and then create masks and erase the parts that are blown out to reveal the bracketed image's detail. I find the results of this much better. Would this still be considered HDR since I am taking the best dynamic range of each image and blending them together?

I have just started to experiment with HDR. I am just trying with haldheld and JPG -format. As hyou can read in different sites a Tripod and RAW-format gives "best" result. With Fotomatix you can adjust contrast, tone range, sharpness etc. I dont know about Photoshop since I dont use it anymore. I think you should try, especially since you got the skill of taking good pictures-
