Painting with Light created by JeffS on Jan 30, 2007:
JeffS said at 10:26 a.m. on Jan 30, 2007:
I've seen a couple of tabblos that use this technique and am interested in trying it out myself. The basic technique is shoot in the dark using a long exposure and "paint" your subject with some sort of light (strobe, flashlight, etc). If you're shooting digital, you would want to use a camera that has less "noise" in low light and during long exposures.

There's some good info here:
http://www.lostamerica.com/how.html

Check out the pictures in the galleries, too. I think my favorite is "wheels".

I have done a little experimenting indoors, but I'm still working on the technique...

Night Cinematography trick: wet streets created by JeffS on Dec 20, 2006:
JeffS said at 4:56 p.m. on Dec 20, 2006:
I'm not sure where I first learned this; maybe in "Visions of Light", which is an excellent documentary on the art of cinematography. In any case, a common "movie trick" is to wet down streets for shooting night scenes. Not only will the scene be more visually interesting, but you'll get more reflected light to balance out the image. So, if you have night/city images in mind, maybe try the shot after a light rain.

Oliver Stapleton answers this question in http://us.imdb.com/indie/ask-archive?date=20060612

In my opinion, possibly the best night cinematography on film is in "Taxi Driver" (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0075314/). Much of the film follows a yellow checker cab around NYC at night. You'll notice that the streets are wet in almost every night shot.

"The Crow" is another movie that used that trick with success. Helped make the city even more depressing, too.

Add your tips and techniques for night photography here...

I found the following list online. Here's a few tips to start with...

#1: Use Night Program or Scene Mode
Let your digital camera's presets help you take great night photos.

#2: Long Exposure Time
A long shutter exposure can aid in taking clear, crisp night photos with your digital camera.

#3: Blur is Not Always a Bad Thing
Artistic use of blur can aid your digital camera night photography.

#4: A Tripod is Vital
Use a tripod to steady your camera when taking long exposures for night photography.

#5: Avoid Optical Zoom If Possible
Using your digital camera's optical zoom may increase 'camera-shake'.

#6: Don't Always Rely on Flash
Flash may not always help your nighttime digital photography.

#7: Reduce Camera Shake with Special Lens
Special lens may help you take better night photos by reducing 'camera-shake'.

#8: Consider Taking Photos at Dusk
Shooting photos at dusk may provide your digital camera with just enough light to take great cityscape photos.

#9: Increase Your ISO
Increase your digital camera's ISO setting to allow for less available light

#10: A Full Moon may Enhance a Photo
Try to add a full moon to your night photos for dramatic effect.

#11: Digital Night Photography - Noise Reduction Mode
Use your digital camera's noise-reduction technology to clean up noisy night photographs.

#12: Shoot Many Photos to Help Compensate for Camera Shake
Compensate for 'camera shake' by taking many photos at nighttime.

#13: Use a Self-Timer Mode
A digital camera's self-timer mode can reduce some camera shake when taking night photos.

#14: Look for Bridges
Bridges can be great photo subjects at nighttime.

Thanks for the tips. I've just recently begun experimenting with manual setting on my camera to take night shots. I've found that when you use a tripod, you can't go wrong...ALMOST.
