Shooting infrared without camera mods created by AdSR on Jun 18, 2007:
AdSR said at 3:37 p.m. on Jun 18, 2007:
I found some interesting stuff on using a non-modified digicam for IR photography. This thread:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message;=23673599
and this page:
http://www.outdooreyes.com/photo94.php3
contain some info on how to shoot and how to post-process.

I haven't tried any of these but thought some of you would be interested. Checking if your camera will support such experiments is also easy - just point a TV remote towards the lens and press a button (for an SLR, you'll need to take a picture, obviously) - you should see a light; don't be surprised if it comes out blue or some other color.

working in RAW? created by Ejmccartin on Apr 2, 2007:
Ejmccartin said at 12:19 p.m. on Apr 2, 2007:
I am very new to this, having just acquired the ability to record RAW but it seems to be a proprietary Nikon format. the only thing I've been able to do so far is use the software that came with the camera to save images as .jpg so that my photoshop cs2 can play with them. but that seems to be defeating the purpose. can anyone point me in the right direction? or tell me some obvious step I've missed? thanks.
LatentE said at 12:31 p.m. on Apr 2, 2007:
I think Nikon was playing a copyright game with their camera raw info and protocol for a while but has now allowed some third party software vendors to handle their cameras. Firstly, what camera are you using? If you're using Photoshop then I think can now handle Nikon RAW format.
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html

You have to download the latest Photoshop camera raw plugin, install it and then use the Adobe Bridge browser to go to the folder with the raw image files and open them with that.
Cruising said at 12:47 p.m. on Apr 2, 2007:
LatentE is correct.

Be sure to download and install the RAW file update in the "exact" directory that the Adobe page says too.

Also - be sure to "remove" the NIKON raw file from the "Adobe" raw directory.

This is outlined on the HTML page where you can get the latest raw file.

The only other program you "may" want to check out is Capture NX. It is designed for Nikon RAW and has a free 30 day trial. It is my favorite tool for working with Nikon RAW files -unless they need huge recovery. Then I typically go to CS2 directly.
Ejmccartin said at 2:51 p.m. on Apr 2, 2007:
you guys are awesome! thanks.
I've got a Nikon D40 so I was a little confused because that web page says I don't need lightroom, but I had skipped right over where I could download camera raw, which I can/should use. I haven't used the software that came with the camera much yet, it might be the capture nx, sounds familiar. maybe it does more than I think, I'm just slightly more familiar with photoshop at this point.

doing the same thing... created by Zero42 on Mar 18, 2007:

I've seen a few other 'instructional' groups on Tabblo and I'd be interested to know what other members think about merging into one big group so we could all share. Pro's and Cons?
JoanW said at 12:03 p.m. on Mar 18, 2007:
Yes, I trhink it would be excellent to get all the instruction and tip tabblos in one place. I haven't come across any other groups, mind you I haven't actively seached, but it would be nice to have a special page just for instructional use only. On looking though this groups tabblos, I have seen several, which although they are excellent tabblos, don't actually give any instruction or hints.
I think that all photos posted on such a site should have accompanying text to describe the purpose of the 'instruction'

Here comes the sun created by Floridamolle on Mar 6, 2007:
Floridamolle said at 7:42 a.m. on Mar 6, 2007:
These pictures I haven't done sooo much with. The thing with birds is that they wait until you are tired of waiting for them to take off, so after watching it for 5 min trough the camera I turned around and zoomed down to 35mm to take an other picture and than it took off. So I turned around and just pressed shutter, had the camera on drive, so I got these three pictures against the sun. The bird was looked very little so I had to crop hard, I guess that made the grainy look. Then I applied a little saturation and decreased the brightness and increased the contrast, and viola, there was Icarus. :-)

The Nobel Art of Nature. created by Floridamolle on Feb 22, 2007:
Floridamolle said at 12:54 p.m. on Feb 22, 2007:
These photos I took this morning around 8:00 am. The first thing is to get the sun right in your face so the sun like shine to through the wings. I exposed directly at the sun reflexion in the water. I cropped the pictures and added saturation and unsharp mask. In my mind I think that it's two ways to make water interesting, either it's crisp and sharp or soft and southing. I this case I wanted the pics to be a little dream like so I applied softening in the end
Cruising said at 1:16 p.m. on Feb 22, 2007:
Very nice and thanks for sharing.

One suggestion - is to place this info as a comment on the Tabblo so folks can find the information (e.g. this is in my favorites :) )...

I know the value of putting it here too - but my suggestion is to put generic techniques here but place stuff relevant to the Tabblo with the Tabblo.

Think of all the folks (in the future) that will stumble across the Tabblo and will lose out on this great info!

(just a suggestion) - and THANKS for sharing.
Margaretshoemaker said at 2:16 p.m. on Feb 22, 2007:
I agree with that suggestion. LatentE is doing that on my tabblos so now I can go right to it and read it again or check on any other addition that's made in order to help. Works great.

Saturation created by Margaretshoemaker on Feb 20, 2007:
Margaretshoemaker said at 11:50 p.m. on Feb 20, 2007:
I want to learn so my first question will be about saturation. What is the use of it and how are the best ways or best subjects to use it on or with?

What Old Houses and Windows Can Tell. created by Floridamolle on Feb 20, 2007:
Floridamolle said at 12:40 p.m. on Feb 20, 2007:
Not so much photo Shopping here. Cropping, Contrast and Brightness, extra brightness on the first house as the pic is exposed against the sky. Then one sepia. The windows I selected and made the reflected pictures stronger. The last one with the Jeep I used fill flash so the background got that dark natural light
Floridamolle said at 12:55 p.m. on Feb 20, 2007:
On the last one I also lightened up a little on the house

Two Birdie Moon Pictures created by Floridamolle on Feb 19, 2007:
Floridamolle said at 8:33 p.m. on Feb 19, 2007:
This was taken at the morning like 11 am, it was sunny and the moon was weak. so I put on a lot of contrast and saturation, made the moon visible and the birds almost glowing. Then I used my favorite, the copy background layer, blur the new layer but this time with radial blur, and put it in multiply blend, that made the it almost like they are flying around the moon.

The end of the road created by Floridamolle on Feb 19, 2007:
Floridamolle said at 2:10 p.m. on Feb 19, 2007:
Here I used a combination that I never used before. after cropping an general fixing I softened the pic. I liked that Idea of soft steel..Then I used unsharp mask and got kinda a soft still sharp picture

Are you willing to share your knowledge? Are we a sharing community or competitive loners? I don't know. but I am here to look at great art and to learn how to make it better.
Pkeener said at 1:45 p.m. on Feb 19, 2007:
Thanks for the invite...I hope to learn and share, but not sure how much you will learn from me!
Cruising said at 1:47 p.m. on Feb 19, 2007:
Just an FYI - I think there are 2 other groups that already have the same intent or title... No big deal - just wanted to let you know.

Help needed from the professionals is one.
Tutorials - Anything Photography is another one.

Photo software and Photoshop are 2 others.

No big deal - just an FYI
DVP said at 1:48 p.m. on Feb 19, 2007:
Ooops, did I join? I think I'm one of those loners....
Floridamolle said at 1:55 p.m. on Feb 19, 2007:
I love your tabblos and pictures Pam, there is so much to learn, not just Photo shopping, even more in how to take pics, and to train the "eye". Me my self are so impressed of people that can make shots of a curtain look like the most fantastic art, even without altering or to tell a story tabblo so I feel that I am there. To learn where to expose when taking snow pics. Like Bob take action pics in low light. I can keep on for hours. I think we all have things to learn from each other
JoanW said at 2:02 p.m. on Feb 19, 2007:
Thanks for your invitation. Great idea for a group. I know I can learn something from anyone who contributes, and am always interested in new, or even old tried and true methods. You made a good start Anders with your Before and After tabblo. It's a good way to demonstrate just what some effort will produce.
Cheers Joan
Floridamolle said at 2:19 p.m. on Feb 19, 2007:
Yes ,I think that there are a lot of groups that overlap each other. My idea was that I want to learn of these that I look at every day, my circle, and I also often get messages from people in my circle asking how it was made. So I started a new group
Floridamolle said at 2:57 p.m. on Feb 19, 2007:
Thank you Bob, love it. Have never worked with RAW, but will try. The painting reminded me of something that I saw a long time ago, but had forgotten.

Margaretshoemaker said at 5:08 p.m. on Feb 19, 2007:
Thanks for the invite and I hope to learn a lot. My really good pictures have always been accidential or when people are not paying attention to me. If I can ever get some of them scaned or on cd, I'll be able to share those as well.
Ejmccartin said at 7:33 p.m. on Feb 19, 2007:
wonderful idea! thanks for the invite. looks like we have great group going here and the idea of sharing how-to's is awesome, be it in the computer or what to look for in the camera. I'm always up for learning something new.

Anders, gongratulations with starting a group. Thanks for the invite.I like to play with PS but there are so many things in it what you can do with your pictures, but I have a lot to practise and it so nice that we can do it together and learn from each other.Thanks.

Thanks for the invitation, Anders. I'm a full amateur, using an ordinary cam (Sony Cibershot, 3.2 megapixels), always in "Automatic" mode... So I think I have a lot to learn and nothing to share! I'll do my best to be one of the best pupils, anyway... :)
Floridamolle said at 11:38 p.m. on Feb 20, 2007:
Thank you everyone who have joined. I have managed to gather such a talented group here. I think that everyone have a lot to give and also to learn. Feel free to create a topic, and write a little description, if it's not already in the tabblo. And not just about Photo Shopping, but everything that can improve a picture, how to expose, to find angles, take motion pics or composition or........... what ever there is
