Letters from Bronze Age

These are some of the 500 images that were carved in Tanum, Sweden, during the Bronze Age period 1800 to 500 BC.

One of the flat rocks reaches over 22 meters and is maybe the most well known single rockcarving, and most visited.

The museum also features a reconstructed Bronze Age farm where you can see the living quarters of the rockcarvers.

The rock carvings has been inscribed on UNESCO's world heritage list with the motivation that:

The rock carvings of the Tanum region constitute an outstanding example of Bronze Age art of the highest quality.

The range of motifs provides exceptional evidence of many aspects of life in the European Bronze Age.

These magnificent pictures, some carved 3000 years ago, bear a unique testimony to the Bronze Age world.

Not only do they make vivid this lost and distant time to us, but these powerful images also have the ability to speak directly to the modern onlooker.

Their subject matters remain unwaveringly pertinent to our human existence, affording us, perhaps,

a new language with which to consider the eternal questions of life and death.

The most famous single image is the so called bridal couple.

These are some slides that I scanned today, inspired by the carving-tabblos I’ve seen recently on Tabblo. I think it's fascinating, and I wanted to share them with you. =)

it is so fascinating, Anna. I have seen the Petroglyphs in Hawaii. They are right on the rocks near the shore on the big island. it is so crazy to think how old they are...and how similar they are all around the world.

Thanks, I had never heard of these. And to think, what would the artists who created these have thought about their work being on a Tabblo 3000 years later? :)

Anna, perodvis har jag nästan varit "stamgäst" i Vitlycke. Speciellt när barnen var små. Det är något magiskt över stället och de budskap som förmedlas. Kul att du fick uppleva det också!!! Finfina bilder!!!

Merci, Tack, Thanks for looking and commenting!
The history of the world is fantastic - and during this period of time there was high developed cultures as well, in egypt for ex.
Saul, only imagine one of the carvers get an insight to the cultures comming. The question is if he would consider it a dream or nightmare? =)

Very interesting tabblo; thank you Anna. There are quite a few petroglyphs around here but none with so much detail. These look like a story board of sorts, depicting special events, ... sort of like a photo album so that you can look back upon and remember.
