Cape Verde is one of the most fascinating countries I've ever been, JASON. My sister is going to visit it next month, and I hope she'll bring me more (and better) photos.

THIERRY: I'm glad you enjoyed this tabblo. Not many people have ever heard of Cape Verde, which is one of the loveliest places in the world. I'll change this tabblo a little bit when I have time, because it was one of my first attempts, and I think I can make it better now.

Yes, PAM, this is a delicious "morna" (it's a typical rhythm which name can be translated as "warm" - and that's exactly the way it is). "Sodade" derives from Portuguese word "saudade", which is the most archetypical expresion of our language: it means the presence of absence. It's similar (not equivalent) to "miss" something, to feel a "bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past". The lyrics say, more or less "Who does show you this distant road / this road to São Tomé? / "Sodade" does it / "Sodade" for my land, San Nicolau / If you write to me / I'll write back to you / If you forget me / I'll forget you / Until the day you come back / I'm longing for my homeland / São Nicolau".

I was trying to understand what "Sodade" meant to help me get the full flavor of the lyrics (which no babel fish could ever give, of course) and I found this blog {http://www.kalamu.com/bol/2005/08/07/getzgilberto-the-girl-from-ipanema/} talking of Brazilian music that helped give me a feeling for the meaning of the word. The writer says: "The way we Black Americans—especially Black Americans from the South—have ‘the blues,’ it seems that Brazilians have this untranslateable feeling of theirs which they call sodade. At first, the term would seem to translate to ‘nostalgia,’ except that we English speakers are usually nostalgic only for things we’ve lost. But Brazilians feel sodade for things that they’ve never had, for things that they do have and for things which they may or may not have in the future."

Sodade. The presence of absence. The blues. Beautiful! And your lovely photographs do the term, the feeling, true justice.

Tres belles photos du Cap Vert , merci Eduardo.Un zeste de beauté sauvage et poétique,une humanité qu' on ne voit plus , nostalgique comme la voix et la musique de Cesaria Evora que j' adore et que j' ai découverte il y a 5 ans .Cela donne envie de visiter ce pays et d' aller à la rencontre de ses habitants.Dommage ne ne pas comprendre le portugais ! Yes, JILL, I've been to many wonderful places, and Cape Verde is one of the most fascinating ones. Its landscape is unique, with lots of dead ships slowly being decomposed by the sea.

HY HOA: You've mentioned one of my favorite songs: Petit Pays. I love verses like "espaoiod ness monde fora / só rotcha e mar", which perfectly define those lovely rocky islands. By the way, I have all the records by Cesária, all of them autographed! Hope you can really visit it in near future - and bring us some more poetic photos.

Well, JIGS, you've got to the point: some words (as well as some sensations) are untranslatable. "Saudade" / "Sodade" is one of those words, feelings, states of mind (of heart), which are so dear to us, Portuguese speakers. A great part of Cape Verde natives live abroad (there are more Cape Verdians living in foreign countries than in their homeland) so this bitter nostalgy of missing home, family, language, is well known by them. Hope I'll be able to vist Cape Verde again (my sister just spent two weeks there, and she misses it a lot: sodade, sodade and more sodade...). Try to download Cesária Évora's songs, and you'll get that feeling.

"Omul sfinteste locul" is the perfect saying to describe CV: it would be a terrible place if it was not for the lovely people who live there. Where else would you find people who salute you all the time in the streets, who invite you to visit their homes, smile at you all the time and really captivate you in a few minutes? I'm glad Portuguese were everywhere (Goa, Macau, Timor, Angola, Mozambique, S. Tomé & Príncipe, Bissau, Brazil...) so we can share such a great heritage: this language, music, literature, and sort of a lyrical way to face the world.

Grazie, PAOLO. It's a pity I didn't have a digital cam when I visited Cape Verde. These photos were scaned, and have no great quality, so they don't make justice to the beauty of that country.

EMA: I'm glad you liked it. I miss this "petit pays" very much.

LUCE: Cesária is the voice of Cape Verde. I've been listening to all her records again and again lately. I made a long travel this week end and took 8 CDs of Cape Verdean music wi me (Cesária, Os Tubarões, Bau) to be my soundtrack. I love listening to the rhythms and the musical language ("crioulo") of these little yet fascinating islands.
