"OWL" CREEK

"Owl" Creek is just a small gully in the foothills just north east of Heyfield.

The variety of trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers is matched by the abundance of bird species - honeyeaters, thornbills, robins, wrens, parrots, lyrebirds, cockatoos etc.

At present, springtime, the wildflowers are abundant. In places, the Greenhood Orchids form a carpet across the ground and over the rocks. Mosses and ferns occupy every shady nook and cranny.

Around each corner of the track a new sight, sound or fragrance greets you.

We have seen a pair of Powerful Owls roosting in the gully on several occassions.

This is our largest owl species, mature adults being as tall as 650mm. They are an awsome sight when you come across them peering down at your "intrusion" into their territory.
