They are sad because they show poverty, but they are also beautiful because they are well done and they reveal dignity, hope, innocence, humanity in these eyes. I think Woody (Esiagian) was right when he talked about culture: Indian culture is indeed in these pics, in the clothes, gestures. There's a Brazilian song that says that "people are born to shine, not to die of hunger". The people you photographed are probably hungry, but you made them shine for a while.
