oud batavia. in the northern part of jakarta, the capital city of indonesia. oud batavia taken from dutch language. also simply addressed as 'kota'. literally means city, but in this case, refer to its appearance as the first settlement had been built by dutch colonial in 15th century.
actually, oud batavia potential enough to be historical destination just like raffles' landing site in singapore. but unfortunately, this place remains forgotten by jakartans.

we love to wandering around oud batavia. in this quarter, time standing still can be mirrored by the old buildings.
the heart of kota is piazza de faletehan or fatahillah square. situated in the front of fatahillah museum. with several canons at the square.
next to the fatahillah museum, there's the oldest cafe in jakarta also several art institutions. from ceramic gallery to skin puppet museum.
about two blocks from this quarter, can be found old canal with some official buildings, old dutch residences and an old bridge, amsterdam's copy look-alike.
and heading to the north is a maritime museum and the oldest port of jakarta: sunda kelapa harbour.

further afield, can be found a dutch mansion that addressed as reiner de klerk's house. a landlord's home which changed its function into an archieves building then an exhibition house.
then the oldest portuguese church and a chinese mansion called 'chandranaya' which already surrounded by skyscrappers.
even some of the buildings looks forgotten, the beauty, charm and architectural sense still can be felt.
hoping all of them will stay the same, so we can still wander around to catch the evening sky and the nice ambience of the past. |
