Bike Ride to Cure Diabetes

The morning of Sunday, September 10th, and I'm gathering with others at the Charlestown Navy Yard so I can start my bike ride to cure Type 1 diabetes.

It's a glorious day, with almost no breeze and we're just about to get going.

You can see the USS Constitution in the background.

It's around 10:30 AM. The riders for the 50-mile and 100-mile treks left hours ago.

Now it's time for those of us who are cycling the 20-mile route.

One last group shot before we all head off.

Here's some of the crew cycling along Memorial Drive in Cambridge, MA.

Further along, and we're taking a break so that all the 20-mile riders can re-group again.

We're about one third of the way there.

Halfway there, we're at the rest stop and grabbing a quick drink and snack.

It's also a great chance to test blood sugars, and get to know our fellow cyclists a bit.

Back on the bikes and heading towards Charlestown Navy Yard. At this stage we're very close to Alewife station in Cambridge, about 10 miles to go!

About two thirds of the way there and someone says "Look at that!".

Is it a bird, is it Superman? No -- it's a B-2 stealth bomber. (The little black dot above the group of buildings.)

(Sorry for the rotten shot, I didn't take time to stop cycling. In real life, it's really impressive.)

Quick stop to get a shot of the Boston skyline.

Another rest break to allow the others to catch up.

Meanwhile, back at Charlestown Navy Yard, my family is touring the USS Constitution. It's a fun way to spend the time waiting for the riders.

Finally back to the starting point.

A chance to relax, get great food, and chat with Dr. Denise Faustman and others.

Ahh, nothing like a good cold drink!

Enjoying the rest and the wonderful day.

Thanks Team Bike the Miles!
