Toledo

Saturday, January 12

By foot, bus, metro, and high-speed train, we made our way to Toledo, a beautiful little city famous for its swords. I did not buy a sword (just a small butterfly knife for camping) but we definitely saw a lot of them. I’ve never seen so many shops that all seemed to be carrying the same items. We took an overabundance of pictures, walked through the winding streets, and basked in the warm sun overlooking the river while talking about language, culture, and relationships. And at supper we had chicken stomach.

<< Toledo is especially special because, if I read my Spanish correctly, it is the head city of a bunch of cities around the world chosen for their incredible contributions to the humanities.

^^ You can buy beer (cerveza) at McDonald's.

<< There are so many artisan shops in Toledo. This one also sells film, for the sake of all the tourists.

For generations, artisan's in Toledo have worked in ceramics, damascene art, and steel. We watched the process by which gold is inlaid, and we saw swords made by the same guilds as make the swords for movies such as Lord of the Rings.
