Storm Front in Silver Spring

Dean Landsman and I had just stepped outside the second floor of a downtown shopping mall, when we looked up..

... and saw a sky so strange and portentious that it looked biblical.

Down at street level, everything looked bright below, dark above.

It had not yet begun to rain, though surely it would soon.

The clouds moved quickly...

In boiling rolls of inky black, mixed with cobalt blue.

Though I've never been through a tornado — at least not one that I've seen (though I've been close to one or two that were scary without visuals)..

It was clear to me that this was likely a breeder of tornadoes as well as just an amazing light show. And indeed there were tornadoes later reported in the area.

Not long after we shot this series, the hard rains began to fall. And news of real damage began to come in.

Amazing. I once saw a similarly apocalyptic sky over the beach in Wellfleet MA. No photos though. I was too busy running for cover...

I wonder if it was because there were lots of lights shining into the clouds.

All the light in the clouds came from the sky. It really looked like that. Very strange and kinda scary.

In fact it was a big storm that dropped a few tornadoes around the area and brought high winds and drenching rain. This was what the sky looked like just before the rock & roll started.
