tHe pOwdEr aRt !

Can one imagine taking a pinch of color powder and spread it on the floor to create a drawing ? try it, it's not an easy job !  The pictures on this tabblo are made with it. "Rangoli" the traditional powder art is not limited just to traditional designs, as reflected in my earlier tabblo of the same name, but Artist put their heart & soul into this art to create beautiful breathtaking pictures as you can see a few here...

(  these are made with just dry color powders, nothing else !!! )

Various artists have been organising such exhibitions in the city at the time of Diwali festival for more than twenty years.  Here featured are this year's creations. The very bad thing about the art is that these creations will be destroyed after a few days !!! After all how long can the powder stay at its place ?! Thanks to photography, atleast it keeps them alive like this !

What's so special in this picture of "Mahatma Gandhi", can you guess ?  No ?!,  yes, it's  a

powder drawing,  but the amazing  thing is ...

...It's  created on water !

Believe it or not !!! Hats off to the artist...

Astonishing! It's hard to wrap my brain around the concept that these will be gone in a few days. All that work. . .Simply WOW!

Heheh, I see there is one with Rai Aishwarya, the "Most Beautiful Woman in the World". I heard that a lot of Hollywood stars go over to India to be in movies with her, but few over here know about her. Didn't she refuse to do a movie with someone recently because it involved a love scene and she decided not to do it because she felt it would dishonor India or something? A friend of mine told me this, he's from Mumbai (Bombay).

Anyway, I once saw some Tibetan monks from Drepung Losling in northern India do one of their sand paintings as well. They are called "Medicine Mandalas" and they are supposedly figurative maps of the entire universe. When they are done with the mandala, they "cut" the corners with their fingers because nobody can really know the secrets of the universe, and they throw it into a river or into the air. Pretty cool. It's more about process than the final product, in other words.

Not necessary to say nothing . This Tabblo already says everything.

"Non attachment" is the concept. We (yes, we, this bunch of phenomenal photographers) will also vanish, ashes to ashes - won't we? These wonderful art works won't last more than a few days (or weeks, or months) just like a flower dies, or a butterfly dies. That's what makes them even more beautiful. I don't think such kind of art could be typical of our western society, it had to be from a place like India (or Japan, or China, or Tibet...). It's incredible how artists deal with light and shadow, using only powder. Or I'd better say, they use some kind of "power" too...

Setu, these are magnificent. I wouldn't mind having a couple of these pictures. It is so hard to believe that these are done with sand. This is artistry at its best. And you are an amazing photographer!

Two outstanding things about this...the art is a wonder in of itself, and your ability to capture them and present the paintings in such a beautful way. Oh, plus, thank you for the education.
