Ängsö National Park, Sweden

Ängsö National Park

is located on a island in the Stockholm archipelago and is an unusual national park. It is a genuine 19th century plantation, saved and maintained as in old days. This makes it a beautiful park with flowering meadows, hardwood forest with lots of small animals and birds. Several species of rare orchids grow on the lovely meadows.

Äng is the Swedish word for Meadow, Ö = island

Left: This is an example of old time harvesting of trees.

The fence is really interesting--I've never seen one like it before. I also love the picture of the big old tree. It has so much character. Beautiful pictures.

Jill: Ahh thats a very typical and traditional fence. Called "gärdsgård". Modern and old summerhouses have then instead of fences or bushes. They are made from young thin trees and the thicker side is up as you see. No nails are used just wood. The "ropes" that hold the trees together is from the berch of the trees. See this link for a modern supplier. http://www.gardsgardsbindarn.se/3.html
