There was no doubt in my mind that I'd be making the trip from New Zealand back to my homeland for my 20th reunion at the University of Pennsylvania. The children had never been there and I wanted to show them and my husband where I had spent four years of my life. We stayed with a good friend and fellow Alumna and had a great time wandering the campus... "That's a new building... hey, what happened to the rugby field? ... I used to play intramural football here... oh, the Towne Building... spent many an hour here working on the Penn Triangle Engineering mag... Here's where Sophie's Cheesesteak Truck used to be..." Boy, talk about reliving the past.

My old room in what was then Ware College House |

The photos on the left remind me of a story. When I lived in this room, I quite often left my windows open for ventilation. Being on the 3rd floor I figured it was fairly safe from intruders, but I never counted on this particular visitor. Several times I'd seen squirrels outside on the ledge but didn't think much of it. But one time, a squirrel got a bit braver and decided to come into my room to look for snacks. I chased it away and from then on, only left my windows open a crack when I wasn't home. I guess that didn't deter this particular squirrel because one afternoon I came home from class and saw wood shavings piled on the windowsill. What the heck? It appears that the squirrel had squeezed through the crack in my window to come in, but when it tried to go out again, it found that it didn't fit through. So, it did what any squirrel would do in the circumstances, and gnawed through the windowsill enough to create a small gap, and escaped that way. You can imagine the laughter of both my friends and the college maintenance staff when I rang up and told them that "a squirrel ate my windowsill!" |
