FiOS install

Last Saturday while attempting to upload some pictures and view a web page I got frustrated with the speed of my cable modem.

I knew that at some point Verizon would have FiOS available so I browsed over slowly. To my surprise I was able to schedule it to be installed next Tuesday. 15mbit down and 2mbit up for $44.95!

This is the 1" underground conduit Ryan needed to pull the cable through. The cables are all pre-terminated so we picked a size that seemed reasonable and started to pull.

There was a pretty tight corner, Ryan yanked from outside and we got it through but it turns out that one was too short by about 15'

While the second longer cable was being pulled through I checked out all the boxes that made up the FiOS install, a few more than a simple cable modem.

Okay so using the shorter cable as a pull string for the longer one did not work since we then had to get two of the big connecters through, scrap that idea and scrap another cable. Using a snake and a third wire we got it through! Horray!

Here is the final cable going in the conduit!

After the cable was through connecting it up on the street was simple, if you have a bucket truck.

The fiber goes right in this box called an ONT. Out of it there are 4 phone lines and one ethernet jack. Verizon also installs a battery backup in case the power goes out our phone lines will still work.

Verizon also provides a wireless router that is great, it has a good firewall, QoS, Dynamic DNS. The only feature I did not see was WPA WiFi so I left the basement wireless off.

The final setup in the basement. Vonage box, the new router, ONT and battery backup.

This is my new measured speed to the NY speakeasy.net test, kinda funny 10 times the speed of the $389 T1 advertised for 44 bucks.

I too am jealous. I can't seem to convince the wife that it's worth it. If they have NESN on fios tv, I'd be all over it.
