Drottningholm Palace, Sweden

Drottningholm  Palace

is where Royal Family of Sweden lives. They have ten more castles of which the Royal Palace in Stockholm City maybe is the most famous and visited.

Drottningholm is located on the island Lovö west of Stockholm

The Drottningholm Palace is on UNESCO´s World Heritage list. It is the most well-preserved royal castle built in the 1600s in Sweden and at the same time is representative of all European architecture for the period.

The oldest Theater in original settings

The Drottningholm Palace Theatre is a theater / opera house from 1766. Nowadays it is run by a private foundation, but you can visit it and it is even in function as a real theatre!

It is the oldest theater still working with original decor, etc The stage machinery, designed by the Italian, Donato Stopani, is still intact and it includes moving waves, trapdoors, cloud cars, lighting machinery and wind and thunder machinery.

The Royal Library

The library is the creation of Princess Lovisa Ulrika of Prussia. Lovisa Ulrika had quite a few interesting collections, which made Drottningholm a popular spot for leading scientists of that time to visit the castle. Carl von Linné for example worked here, cataloguing the royal collections' "natural objects". Carl von Linné is a famous swedish biologist, and is often called the "Father of Taxonomy". His system for naming, ranking, and classifying organisms is still in wide use today.

Baroque Garden

This formal garden is called the Baroque Garden and is directly adjoined to the Palace. Formal in the way that there is no flower in sight. Just lawns, hedges, statues, some fountains and 'manicured' trees.
