kicking the habit

03/02/08

Boulder, Colorado

On the Sunday morning sidewalk

Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.

'Cos there's something in a Sunday

Makes a body feel alone.

And there's nothin' short of dyin'

Half as lonesome as the sound

On the sleepin' city sidewalks

Sunday mornin' comin' down.

Seems kinda sad to me. Looks like people moving on short notice. The plastic liquor magnum bottle mobile may represent the high life, but only in terms of escape from reality.

You are quite the story teller....
Appropos said at 9:18 a.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
incredible photos.. living in country with only two seasons its a bit hard for me to imagine how cold it is but the photo of the bike says it all .. beautifully cold...

Excellent tabblo Pam. Great work on the images and the captions!
Lifequest22 said at 9:32 a.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
My red Converse. Thanks for finding it. Love this set. Is that couch in the middle of the street? A lot happening in this neighborhood and you caught it all. All the snow is melted on the ground where the motorclyle's parked but the bike is still full of snow. Hmmmmm.
SeánanForbes said at 9:43 a.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
There is a strange, suspended feeling to the day you captured here. It's like seeing a story in a moment when everything is in-between.
Cowgirl said at 10:31 a.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
Yes a little strange indeed .you did a great job showing the strange Sunday ...
Ira said at 10:51 a.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
Very interesting to look each photo individually and all together
Pkeener said at 10:55 a.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
Seanan, you hit the nail on the head. These shots were all taken on "the hill" near the University of Colorado campus. This section of town is notorious, not only because it is home to the off campus student housing, frat houses and sororities, coffee shops, bars, pawn shops and music venues...it became THE place to go in the late 60's, for hippies, transients, runaways, and people on "the scene". I have never seen it this deserted. It felt like everyone had gone to the moon. Probably sleeping of hangovers, and hiding from the snow. it was 72 degrees the day before! At any rate, i was delighted to be so lucky to get these shots, with the snow undisturbed, and the "suspended feeling".

Leftie, thank you for your astute choice of the Kris Kristofferson clip. He explains the song the way he wrote it, not the way Johnny Cash sang it, although, i love his version, too.

Amiga, the shoe is for you. LAtent, that mobile was so great. They used a Hula Hoop!
Pkeener said at 10:57 a.m. on Mar 3, 2008:

As Boy George (or was it David Bowie? dunno da difference) used 2 sing, "this is not America"... Or is it?
Leftofcenter said at 12:15 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
u don't know the difference between Boy George and Bowie???? WHO was YOUR musical mentor?????? smartie pants!
Pkeener said at 12:35 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
One of my faovorite songs by Bowie is "The Young Americans" especially that line where he quotes the Beatles...I heard the news today, oh ,boy. What a great tune. Leftie, please dont ask Gretel any open ended quetions on my tabblow!

Great tabblo!!
AliDar said at 1:18 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
It all seems kinda sad to me too. Everything seems discarded, abandoned, some of it in the middle of the doing like the truck filled with belongings, now covered with snow ... and that suspended feeling your talking about just adds to that lonely feeling. ... When I scroll through the pics, I always stop at the sofa. ... I like how it's framed with all the empty street.
Mtorourke said at 1:28 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
I think these pictures actually capture the conciseness of the hill. Young men and women attempting to balance the challenges of college and the party culture of Boulder. All of this without one person in a picture!
Pkeener said at 1:38 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
Thank you, Michael. you know, it reminded me of some of those grey days we spent on the hill. when everything feels fuzzy and a little bit off. all the kids in hoodies, lurking around the store fronts. Except, yesterday, no one was around. i actually tried to find some people to capture, and finally gave up. Sunday Mornin coming down...

Un sursaut de l'hiver. La neige fige les choses et le temps, dans un silence éphémère. Le printemps prendra bientôt le dessus. Merci pour ce beau tabblo, salut mon amie.

Thierry, thank you for your insight and observations. north winds.
Pkeener said at 2:17 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
Dar, yes. when i saw that truck, the first thought that came to my mind was "bummer". moving day. in the snow. again, not a soul was around...guess they weren't too concerned abbout their belongings being exposed, or stolen.
Noe said at 3:19 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
Ecellent images Pam... quite set! =P
Eduardo.affonso said at 5:41 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
Don't know why these pics remind of of those you took in New Orleans some time ago. There's a feeling of desolation, of interrupted life. Besides all, there's really something in a Sunday that makes a body fell alone.
Leftofcenter said at 8:19 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
this isn't SAD at all!! this looks like my driveway on a GOOD day when the boys pick up "cool" couches and dart boards at various curbs, thats what kids do!!! didn't u??? (i didn't) its gypsy living. it's whack, it's not sad.
Pkeener said at 8:25 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
I have to agree with leftie. It wasn't sad at all. Just deserted. The Party's ovah. well, the truck was sad...
Leftofcenter said at 8:26 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
they'll be back!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AliDar said at 8:42 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
Chuckling at you two! :)
Lifequest22 said at 8:45 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
amigas, I AGREE. That's what Sundays are about. They're always quiet. It's a day rest. What i always find sad are Sunday nights-they signify that the weekends over--back to work or school or whatever.
Leftofcenter said at 8:50 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
CHUCKLING again Dar-ling???????????????
AliDar said at 9:12 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:

love this one sistah :) i know which word...yes, we shouldn't use that word on pammie's tabblo..i remember the hill..actually went up there one night when i was around 13-14 ('71-'72), pretty freaky place back then...that was when the turnpike was still a turnpike!! i love how you always capture the feelings and vibes in all your pics :) what a great story :)
SteveBrisendine said at 11:02 p.m. on Mar 3, 2008:
Wow wow wow .... So many cool shots in this one, and sort of a sweet melancholy ache to the overall feel.
Abking said at 12:15 a.m. on Mar 4, 2008:
There's a palpable quiet running through this tabblo. All the signs of presence, but not a soul in sight. The only live one is behind the camera. The song makes a good backdrop to the visuals and captions. Whistle and kick a can when you walk down those lonely streets.
Charlespop said at 12:25 a.m. on Mar 4, 2008:

I have that feeling, Rita. Could never explain the reason. Empty streets... I love the photo of the bikes. Reminds me of mine in front of my house.
