Make three wishes

Senhor do Bonfim (Our Lord of the Good Death)

is the patron saint of Bahia, where his name is also used to refer to Oxalá, the most important of the orixás (African gods), who created the world and the human beings.

In the Candomblé faith, one can tie a "fita" (ribbon) of Senhor do Bonfim around the wrist and with each of three knots make a wish.

 

If the fita is left to come off on its own, then the wishes will come true.

These colorful ribbons are a sign of devotion,

but are now used also as pattern for beach towels, t-shirts, dresses, etc.

Muy significativa la foto de las cintas y, al fondo, el santo, la estatua... Resume lo religioso. Y, al principio, el placer del sol, la luz, el "dolce far niente"... Good idea, my friend!! PAM: You shouldn't have said you wish you could take pics like that!! Now this wish won't come true. Well, I still have some ribbons, so maybe you can have your wish back. I once used one of these ribbons, and it really worked. In fact my wishes depended only on me, so...

Yo usé una a los quince años, se vendían acá, estaban de moda. And I guess I used one when we traveled by Bahia at 1986 ... But I don´t remember very well. BUT I know it (or they) worked... or Senhor do Bonfim! worked, really! Maybe you or Júnia put it in me!

Belo tabblo. Também gostei da primeira foto e das 2 últimas tb. Difícil ir à Bahia e não voltar de lá com uma fitinha dessas amarrada no pulso.Eu tb já tive umas, pelo menos uma meia dúzia delas mas quando arrebentam já não me lembro o que pedi.

ANNELIES: No, these are 3 different towels. The sun is available in this country about 12 months per year - and I think all you need is to get your visa, pack your bikinis and probably all your wishes will come true.

Este sempre foi o meu problema com as fitinhas: no fim já nem sabia o que havia pedido. Cheguei a pedir a mesma coisa 3 vezes para não esquecer. Bom... fitinhas do Bonfim à partir, eu AMEI este tabblo. Mas o que eu queria mesmo era estar lá!

Olá, Eliane!!! Eu nao falo em "vergonha" (vergüenza) funda, mas eu acharia rara "myself" com uma fitinha em certas cituacoes (nao tenho o c com cedilha), na vida real, depois de uma viagem. Eu usaria a fita, eu acho, na Bahia, na vida informal, mas sentiria diferente, talvez em situacoes mais formais... É só uma hipótese... Nao é vergonha pelo que é nem o que simboliza a fita,. Pls eu gostaria na ter problemas de interpretacao errada...

Liliana, no te preocupes, pues não te interpretei errado, não. Tranquila. Eu entendo. Mas, sabe o que é? Depois de morar tanto tempo aqui, já perdi a vergonha nesse sentido, entende?
De acordo com o Eduardo (ei, Edu, por onde você anda,hein? Tá tão sumido!), o Senhor do Bonfim é mesmo poderoso e já fez verdadeiros milagres. Mas mesmo assim, acho que muito trabalho para o pobre coitado...

Thanks for your visit and comments, JANE, JUDE, ALLAN, AKE & EDITE. Don't know if there's any tradition like these in your countries - this one is quite popular around here.

LILIANA & ELAINE: Certamente "vergonha" não é bem a palavra, mas eu tampouco usaria uma fitinha dessas hoje em dia. Se bem que devo a uma delas (ou será que não?) um novo trabalho, um novo amor e a mudança para uma cidade melhor. Devia ter pedido fama, fortuna e forma física impecável, né? Agora é tarde.

Cê não vai acreditar, mas eu estava conversando com uma Elaine ao telefone quando escrevi o comentário. Aliás, uma Elaine que morre de raiva quando a chamam de Eliane! Ainda bem que não troquei o nome dela, ou levaria bronca dupla.
