Great Verrazano Bridge shot. Looks like it was taken from Dyker Heights?
LatentE said at 1:02 a.m. on Mar 6, 2008:
Thanks everyone for the kind comments. Saul, the picture was actually taken from the top floor of a tall apartment building in Midwood. I don't remember which lens I used. I had a 400mm preset (which I still have) but I doubt I used that since it's too long for a casual carry along, which was likely the situation. Might have been the 200mm that I had then. It's a film shot as can probably be noted by the grain. Tri-X or Ilford HP-5.

I've set up a line-of-sight on the shot.

The Coney Island image is a high dynamic range composite.

I am in love with your Verrazano Bridge photo - it's dramatic and graphic and what brilliant chiaroscuro!

Fantastic b/w

Love these!! Interesting choice to use b/w for something as colorful as a sunset. Definitely not SOP but I love the result.
Leftofcenter said at 7:31 a.m. on Mar 6, 2008:
First I thought, okkk, another sunset........................ but this is miles beyond the beaten path!!! surreal in b/w!! the bridge photo is brutally beautiful. I'm listening LatentE.

Love this BLK AND wht shots .
PaulBarfoot said at 9:25 a.m. on Mar 6, 2008:
Beautiful shots. I love the stark moodiness of the Coney Island picture. As Ansel Adams knew - if you have the full range of gray values (the 10 "zones") in a b&w shot it has more impact than the same scene in color.
Keeli said at 9:26 a.m. on Mar 6, 2008:
Fantastic images, beautiful!
Pkeener said at 9:46 a.m. on Mar 6, 2008:
I love the first shot and caption. i immediately thought of Van Morrison. that song where he talks about coney island. moody. it is a rare treat, indeed, to see your stuff. thank you

Thanks again everyone. This tabblo was actually something of a quick personal response to one of the U.S. presidential candidates who apparently at a barbeque for the press in a vacation spot of his state made a crack about people going there for the sights rather than "Brooklyn." Sweet. Another "uniter." Ironically, when I posted this tabblo I noticed another new one of exactly that other area. It "too" is beautiful. :P

Leftie, sorry but "listening" goes right by me. Je ne comprends pas. Je suis désolé. :P "Brutally beautiful" though has me intrigued. With "beautiful" it would seem to imply a woman but for some reason I can't seem to bring to mind any women, famous or otherwise, that I can fit to that interesting description. Courtney Love in "People vs.?" I'm sure there are many but I'm drawing a blank right now.

Pam, I'm not very knowledgeable of music. I do remember a review of a Morrison club show about ten years back, in NYC. At least one part of the review. At one point Morrison asked the audience for requests. One was for Moondance. In response he seemed a bit annoyed, I guess having long since gone toward more pure blues. He said he didn't do that song anymore. I'm not familiar with the Coney Island tune. Checking the web for the lyrics and seeing unfamiliar names and locations, very Celtic in nature, I did a bit more searching. There are a few Coney Islands. From checking for my prior actual tabblo on Coney Island I had found that there's no definitive story on where that name comes from so it's probably not a copy of a name from another source. No "New Coney Island" with the new dropped. Anyway ..

Coney Island, County Down, Northern Ireland

Coney Island, County Down, in Northern Irealnd. This is the one that Van Morrison sings about on 'Avalon Sunset'. It used to be populated by fishermen but now it's houses are holiday cottages and the sand-dunes around them are a bird snactuary...but still beautiful.

Jigs, I keep having to look up what "chiaroscuro" means. My mind doesn't seem to retain or absorb knowledge as it once did. :P There's a blogger on the web (probably more than one) that uses that as a nick.

Again, thanks, Ira (korinka), Andre, Steve, Saul, Jigs, Charles, Teo Wind (Hhwind), Wendy (Wlk68), Leftie (Leftofcenter), Bobbie (Bursick), Paul, Keeli, Pam (Pkeener), Debra (Debdog), Linus (Zumberge), Pat (Candlepower), Thierry (Chiloedream), Connie (ConnieL), Manuel (Magedimages), Marranei and SterlingGray. You are all very kind.

Also thanks to the Tabblo people firstly for creating, building, maintaining and providing this outlet for expression and today for helping expand that expression to some extra eyes with the TOD choice.

So much has been said about this wonderful slice of NY, I will just ditto all above. Coney Island is one of those place I never made it to when I lived in Jersey. But I did make it to Palisades Park. I do remember hearing about the bridge a lot when it first opened. Wasn't that the same year as the Worlds fair.
LatentE said at 5:55 p.m. on Mar 7, 2008:
I think you're right Linda. The New York "World's Fair" was in 1964 and I think the bridge opened then too. Then it was the longest suspension bridge in the world though not anymore.
LatentE said at 6:01 p.m. on Mar 7, 2008:
I think I went to Palisades Park once as a kid though I can't remember anything about it. There was also "Freedomland" in the Bronx. It was a Disneyland type amusement park but it didn't last long. There was also Playland in Rockaway Queens and probably more that I don't remember. I actually rode the Parachute Jump, the tower in the boardwalk image, when I was a kid. I think it closed in 1964.

Pkeener said at 11:10 p.m. on Mar 8, 2008:
here it is. If you get the opportunity, please listen to it. Your photo goes (uncanny!) so well with the mood of the song.

Coming down from Downpatrick
Stopping off at St. John's Point
Out all day birdwatching
And the craic was good
Stopped off at Strangford Lough
Early in the morning
Drove through Shrigley taking pictures
And on to Killyleagh
Stopped off for Sunday papers at the
Lecale District, just before Coney Island

On and on, over the hill to Ardglass
In the jamjar, autumn sunshine, magnificent
And all shining through

Stop off at Ardglass for a couple of jars of
Mussels and some potted herrings in case
We get famished before dinner

On and on, over the hill and the craic is good
Heading towards Coney Island

I look at the side of your face as the sunlight comes
Streaming through the window in the autumn sunshine
And all the time going to Coney Island I'm thinking,
Wouldn't it be great if it was like this all the time.
LatentE said at 11:33 p.m. on Mar 8, 2008:
Thanks Pam. I thought you were looking for a UToob video. I saw the lyrics and the Celtic names and knew it wasn't Brooklyn's Coney Island. I found the CD and the song. Morrison sounds a little strange. A little like someone from Boston and then Chicago trying to sound Irish. :P
