Round Lake Library Presents... ANCIENT INDIA!

The excavation of Ancient India took place at the Round Lake Library on Wednesday, March 19, with diligent young archaeologists digging their way to knowledge.

The Taj Mahal was the most modern representation of India present, and it was built in the 1600s

Siddhartha Gautama, founder of Buddhism

The god Shiva

Hinduism is the oldest major religion that is still being practiced today, and its origins begin in Ancient India.  Hindus believe the elephant is a sacred creature.

Elephants were first "tamed" in Ancient India, and have been used for heavy tasks in agriculture.  India was one of the first countries to use elephants in war, and are largely credited for keeping Alexander the Great out of India in the 4th century B.C.

Sanskrit

Chaturaji, which is the 4-player version of Chaturanga, was the first game of Chess

The string of stuffed elephants is a symbol of good luck and the bell at the bottom wards off evil spirits

The Ancient Indian game Pachisi has withstood the test of time, and remains the national game of India today.  Here in the U.S., it is most commonly recognized as the well-loved American board game, Parcheesi.

Easily, the highlight of the program was the opportunity for the young archaeologists to receive henna body art temporary tattoos by Briana and Israel.

Israel draws an intricate henna flower bracelet

Briana draws a sword, while sporting her elaborately designed henna tattoos on her own hands, done by Israel

There were many happy faces at this program.  Some walked away with henna tattoos that will stay with them for a couple of weeks, but they all walked away with a greater understanding of the culture of Ancient India!
