Tishfish, those are the seed pods on my Japanese Maple tree. As the leaves come in, the pods fall off. And let me tell you, you do NOT want to step on those things barefoot! They are very sharp and pointy. That's the only thing I don't like about this tree. Tons of them seem to drop daily as the tree becomes more and more full. I have to rake them up regularly. But, I just love this tree. It gets so full, so fast and is the best shade tree ever!
