Sossusvlei is an incredibly beautiful part of the Namib Desert. The dunes here are about 50 km inland from the sea, and are shaped by a combination of the West wind blowing in from the sea, and an East wind the blows across Africa. Some of the dunes are over 1,000 feet high, and in the "dune corridor" each of the really large dunes is numbered. Many have names such a Big Daddy, and Big Mama.
The early morning and late afternoon light paints yellow, pink, orange and red shades on one side of the dune, highlighting the shapes and curves. It is almost impossible to get a bad photograph here. |
