St George's Church is the earliest Anglican Church in the region. The two great men involved in building the church is Reverend R.S. Hutchings and Captain Robert N. Smith of Madras Engineers, who also painted the early views of Penang. |

|
The church building cost 60,000 Spanish dollars. The original Madras-style roof was unsuited to the climate. It was later changed to a pitched roof in 1864.
Do visit this heritage building when you are in Penang. It is open daily till noon. |

|
During the Second World War, the church structure was only slightly damaged surprisingly. But the interior was badly looted.
The only original item left was the font and the bishop's chair.
