St George's Church

St George's Church is the earliest Anglican Church in the region. The two great men involved in building the church is Reverend R.S. Hutchings and Captain Robert N. Smith of Madras Engineers, who also painted the early views of Penang.

The church building cost 60,000 Spanish dollars. The original Madras-style roof was unsuited to the climate. It was later changed to a pitched roof in 1864.

Do visit this heritage building when you are in Penang. It is open daily till noon.

During the Second World War, the church structure was only slightly damaged surprisingly. But the interior was badly looted.

The only original item left was the font and the bishop's chair.

More sharing in my site on my lovely Penang island.

The founder of Penang Captain Francis Light monument is in the shape of a Greek Temple.

In his capacity as the Governor the settlers and natives were greatly attached to him. And by his death had to deplore the loss of one who watched over their interest and cares as a father.
