The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall 國立中正紀念堂, is a monument erected in memory of Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China in Taipei, Taiwan. A new name for the structure, National Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall 國立台灣民主紀念館. With the name change, came protests and debate as to how Chiang Kai-shek should be portrayed in history books, a cruel dictator who was responsible for the death of many Taiwanese or a hero who attempted to eradicate the Chinese Communists. However the books are written, the area is amazing. The blue roofed structures, manicured gardens, coy fish pond, and open area give the public the chance to enjoy nature and democracy at its best. CKS, a hero or villain, is yet to be determined but this hall is one of my favorite places to be on a sunny day. If you can, czech it out! Did you know? In 1975, a month of mourning was declared after Chiang Kai-shek’s death. The Taiwanese people were asked to put on black armbands. |
