Coney Island Revisited

The skies have been dramatic and beautiful this spring at Coney Island. The main rides are open for another year, at least. The "show" goes on.

Last year's look at Coney Island. [*]

Nathan's is open, but then it's been open all year round since .. what does the sign say? .. 1916.

The subway station is brand new with remembrances of the old glory days of the giant Coney Island "parks" that were the playground to America.

It's time to prepare for the crowds .. get ready for the fun, the rides and the games.

Catch some fish in the mean time. It helps if you speak Russian.

Neptune is rising for another year.

Get your ticket to ride.

Then, before it gets really hot and the crowds come, you can take a relaxing stroll on the beach.

If you look closely you might be able to see that this mother has brought a very young child along for a seaside walk and some gentle ocean spray.

Very nice! You're right about the clouds and skies. Great night shots. It's been a while since I have been to Coney Island, and rode the Cyclone (and went to a Cyclones game).

Wonderful. I don't know if it was intentional but there's a great sense of bittersweet nostalgia to these pics. Very nicely done.

You take beautiful photographs. What an eye you have for color, detail, and you make the mundane things seems so special and full of beauty. I think that takes a real gift which you obviously have. Thanks so much for sharing.

Terrific tabblo. I've never been to Coney Island, but get the flavor from your diverse images. Seems old-fashioned in the nicest possible way. Steeped in nostalgia, but still there, durable as bedrock.

Another great set. Love the B/W of the boardwalk.
LatentE said at 8:20 p.m. on Apr 15, 2008:
Thanks everyone for the kind words.

The skies have been interesting many times during the last few weeks. For this tabblo many of the images (the first and the last ten) were taken one early evening a few days ago in about a two hour time span. So it was pretty much similar clouds with the sun moving over the horizon changing the colors. Many of the images are HDR (high dynamic range) which enhances the shadows and highlights making early evening images look more natural than they would normally. Perhaps unnatural in terms of what a regular photo would produce, but more in line with what the eye tends to see. The first image isn't HDR though the clouds were enhanced. The Break-Dance ride also is not HDR and still you can see how deep and textured the clouds were. The image above the Break-Dance ride of a kids ride also isn't HDR though I used a second image to give the streaking effect of motion.

Here's a "What's Different?" puzzle. The panorama image and the one below it are of the same area (the right side of the panned image). There's a difference though, besides viewpoint. Can you spot it?

I looked at pic my eye didnt see to much difference . the only thing i did see is you took the
last pic closer and a different angle...!!!!!!!!!
Saulblum said at 8:34 p.m. on Apr 15, 2008:
"What's Different?" The curved top of the light pole is gone! How'd that happen?
LatentE said at 8:49 p.m. on Apr 15, 2008:
You spotted the difference Saul. The lamp post curved out of the top of the frame, without the lamp visible. It was like a giraffe's neck without the head. So I rubber-stamped it out of the picture.

Latent, you make me think. you delight my photographer's soul. You make me smile and yearn for a stroll on the beach. I can just hear the carnival rides. Your use of natural light and knowledge of what you know should be in a good photo is unbelievable. That shadow from the mom is soooooo long. And to top it off, Now I want a Coney island hot dog. Real hard to find in Colorado.

T H A N K Y O U! unbelievable skies, indeed.

What s great set of pics. I really feel like I have visited Coney Island. I love that it is so deserted and allows us to see so much so that we can soak up the atmosphere. The skies are just beautiful, and you have shown us that no matter what the season, there is always something beautiful to photograph. I especially like the panoramic shot of the boardwalk, nad the night shots. I can imagine the beach packed with day-trippers, and kids wandering around the amusemennt park eatng cotton candy. A lovely visit thank you.
I am hoping to get back to assembling some Tabblos once I get my new glasses some time next week, after having two cataract surgeries in November and February, I am still living in a bit of a blur until I get my new lenses. Cheers Joan

very Impressive.... I've seen some of these on some of your other great tabblos... did you do some photoshop work on them? I Enjoy your work! Kelly
LatentE said at 9:44 a.m. on Apr 20, 2008:
Thanks again everyone. Kelly, these are all new, in terms of having been posted here. The one of Nathan's in sunlight is a year old but I don't think I've posted it. The rest have been shot within the last month or two. Many of the scenes are the same as my prior Coney Island tabblo. Unfortunately Coney Island, in terms of the carnival attractions, isn't that big.

This sweeping panorama of Coney Island literally vibrates in color & definition on a level that is truly stunning. If ever there will be a contemporary artspace/museum established that is dedicated to the still living and seemingly rejuvenated spirit of that holy place, this collection of photographs MUST be in its permanent collection in a space of prominence. I do believe I was once blessed to share time & experiences with the mysterious LatentE and have just now been alerted to this site by one of our mutual brothers in spirit..Muchas gracias...the second shot, of the boardwalk panorama with the moving mass of inky blue clouds , draws my awareness up & into it and keeps a mesmerizing hold on my attention..making me wonder, where was I when this was taken, at that precise moment?...RudydeRightBank...
