I think what I like to impart is that these people engaging in an affair are quite stuck in their situation, and the result can be very saddening. I guess the wooden cats help depict this. The fact that they look sweet and charming (as Angelo pointed out), they seem sad, too. Their wooden nature also boosts the 'static' and somber nature of the situation.
