For Burma and China

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can it be?

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven? And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Some of you say, "Joy is greater thar sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater." But I say unto you, they are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits, alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy. Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced. When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.

- Kahlil Gibran on Joy and Sorrow

from "The Prophet"

The death toll in Burma is currently rising to 32,000, while in the recent tragedy in China, the number is reaching 12,000.

My heart grieves and goes out to all the people whose relatives and friends have died in these recent horrifying tragedies. Peace.

If only their own governments had a fraction of the empathy that you show, James. Each tragedy in life leaves its imprint on our souls.

It's impossibile to have too much joy, much more esasier is to have too much sorrow. And when the sorrow is too much, you almost forget the joy you had. There are people in the world that continually add sorrow to sorrow; for them itsnt' enough what nature is doing, there is also what men dont' do for them. Ciao, dear.

Thank you for doing this tribute to two terrible tragedies! It's so hard to grasp the numbers, as Pam said, they are so huge. My heart goes out to them.

This is a wonderful tribute you did, James! One feels so helpless in the face of these two catastrophes. All one can do is watch the news and pray... pray that the Myanmar government still has a soul and will allow its people to be saved and given aid... pray that the children trapped in the rubble after that terrible earthquake will all be rescued alive. And what a beautiful passage from "The Prophet" you've chosen - so profound and appropriate!
