FAUX HDR

I don't have the equipment to do real High Dynamic Range images so I have been playing with clone stamp to paint different exposures on the same image:

Save an exact copy of the original image

Enlarge both images to the maximum and set clone stamp on one pixel size in order to target the same pixel in both images

Lighten or saturate the original image and paint it on the target image using a low degree of opacity (20% or so) to add extra colour,  lighten dark areas, etc of the target image.

Go back to original image and change settings as necessary and paint that information onto target image.

What do you think?

Wow, what a huge difference. Thanks for the instructions, even though you lost me half way through. I will have to read up on this and figure it out.

You've definitely brought out the details more in the second version of the river and cyclist. I don't know if I've actually seed a Hight dynamic range photo before to compare the results of your work to. I must say though, I do like the top version of the first photo better, and I'm assuming it's your unaltered version. The colour and lighting seem more natural to me, and it's softness gives the feeling of an idyllic peaceful setting.
