Falling out of the nest

Our "backyard" is a stand of Alder trees. The last 3 years a pair of Lesser Bitterns have made their nest in the trees. They returned this year. Yesterday one of the chicks fell out of the nest. He was wandering around the yard and Mom was calling for him/her. Mom was still calling last night when we went to bed and the youngster was no where to be seen. I checked to see if he followed the chickens into the coop, nope. Good luck little buddy!

(Yes, those are all Fords!)

These birds are in the same family as the Blue Heron. They are waders in the estuaries around here. This little guy has some mighty big feet to grow into, if he survives!

Vielen Danke! We have a Coolpix 990 with telephoto. The little fella was moving slow and we didn't want to get too close. Also, cropping the photo on iPhoto gave a closer perspective
