Penang Nyonya Wedding

The Nyonyas of Penang are the last of a dying breed. There is only a handful of Strait Settlements Chinese ladies left to carry out this lovely rich heritage.

Though Nyonya food is still cooked by lots of Penang Chinese, the lovely Baju Panjang is no longer worn at all except on traditional Nyonya Wedding.

A Baju Panjang must also have a sangul as the head decor

Nyonyo Wedding are very elaborate as it is accompanied by an Indian Mandor who in the past is the family gardener or driver. Meaning a trusted servant to help send off the daughter of a rich man.

He usually carries an umbrella as he accompanies her out of the house, protecting her from the sun.

I shared some insightful thoughts of having a modern day Nyonya wedding here

Nyonya Wedding is very elaborate as it is a 12 days ceremony.

Very nice photos Pearlie. The Nyonya culture is a unique and beautiful culture which is the culmination of the harmonious intermarriage of Chinese and Malay culture.

Penang Peranakan Association holds these cultural heritage activities every year. You just have to be there at the right place and the right time, Leong San. 2008 Cheah Kongsi Chap Goh Meh evening. usually in Penang either on the Human being birthday or Chap Goh Meh night.

Yes, the tok panjang (long table of 12) where our grandfather sits and presides the table is something I will never forget for a very long time! We used to have this in Sungai Bakap Kee Kongsi and today the table is burn but replace by 10 over tables when we have the hungry ghost festival.

If you are keen, this festival is only in Kee kongsi every year, very private but I can let you know and you can come as my guest, Teo
