Southern Thailand: Nov - Dec 2002

Map of Southern Thailand

Spent three weeks in Southern Thailand doing a field studies and research module while I was still an undergrad. That was before the region became restive. It is certainly a meaningful and unforgettable trip... how time flies.

This Tabblo briefly documents my experience there... Those were the days when I was still using a compact film camera and before I developed an interest in photography. Had to scan the photos in before I could upload them.

Am dedicating this Tabblo to Siang Hwee, a group mate and personal friend, who lost his battle with brain cancer in August 2006. Thanks for the wonderful memories mate, and you're greatly missed.

Students at a local elementary school in Hatyai.

A typical classroom in a rural village.

That's us after taking a dip in a waterfall.

Finding time to dye our hair.

Jel and me.

Drafting our group proposal... all without the use of a computer. That was certainly a challenge.

Exhausted after intense discussion for our research paper.

Signboard in Hatyai: Do you need any? Hah...

Front - Back: Myself, Siang Hwee, Jel and Yihui.

Conducting interviews with locals as part of our research

Fishing village

Crossing the Tinnasulanon bridge to Koh Yor Island in Songkhla Lake.

Migratory birds spotted in Songkhla Lake

Retrieving the fishing nets

Children from a Pattani village.

Frolicking in water...

Us, exhausted after climbing up a hill...

But the reward was well worth the effort: Panoramic view of Songkhla city

Fishing port in Pattani.
