Balagtasan and Bailas

Pepe Goes To Market ~ A 3-day arts festival held at Market/Market in the city of Taguig, in commemoration of the birth of the Philippines' national hero Jose Rizal. This was just one of the specials featured there: Balagtasan and Bailas by the people of Bulacan province.

 

Balagtasan : an distinctive style of poetic oratory, using a singsong rhythm and metered rhyme, unique to the province of Bulacan and created by poet Francisco "Balagtas" Baltazar.

When I was in Grade 1, I was the middle guy in our balagtasan show. Haha! Can't remember much, though. :) It's cool that you shared this with the rest of the world :)

JAMES - I like sharing bits of what we are about to the rest of the world that they don't get to see because it's not considered "media-worthy", the same way I enjoy getting an inside-look at the real and everyday life of cultures from all over because of the purity and personalness of their authenticity. I used to think balagtasan was so hokey - I guess we evolve and become more appreciative as we get older ;-)
