ARE THERE REALLY ANY BORDERS OR PATHS THAT CANNOT BE TRAVELLED IN PEACE?

The winds that blow through the wide sky in these mounts, the winds that sweep from Canada to Mexico, from the Pacific to the Atlantic - have always blown on free men.

In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.  ~Franklin D. Roosevelt

"As to his statesmanship, it is written in the history of Canada. It may be said without any exaggeration whatever, that the life of Sir John Macdonald, from the time he entered Parliament, is the history of Canada."  Let us recall Macdonald's famous unity quote: "Let us be English or let us be French (but) above all let us be Canadians."

~ Sir Wilfrid Laurier (The House of Commons, June 8, 1891, after death of Sir John A. MacDonald)

The American Revolution was a beginning, not a consummation.

~Woodrow Wilson

Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed - else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die.

~Dwight D. Eisenhower

As to unity nothing can symbolize it more than the formation of the First Special Service Force during WWII. They were the protagonists of the Green Berets of the U.S. Army and were composed in almost equal numbers of Canadians and Americans. Under Colonel Frederick, later General, they achieved colossal feats in Italy against the Germans such that they were known as the Devil's Brigade by them.

my Grandfather served in this Al....:)
Debdog said at 1:49 a.m. on Jul 1, 2008:
he never spoke much of it...the horrors they must have seen, and the hardships for them!
Debdog said at 1:49 a.m. on Jul 1, 2008:
he died long ago, i am sorry to say....a FINE MAN!
Alnorman57 said at 11:51 a.m. on Jul 1, 2008:
A good friend and working colleague of mine served alongside him and is now also deceased. Americans and Canadians are one people, actually. Ever since the misunderstanding of 1812 we have been there for each other when it counted. Let's call ourselves North Americans!
Pattymaryclare said at 12:44 p.m. on Jul 1, 2008:
Thx to one and all for your GREAT comments...on this 'unity' themed tab! Thanks to Dad for his history lesson as well (i was not aware as our Debs was! your grandfather and my dad's friend were fina brave men indeed!) A long time ago I coined the phrase that the two countries should be called The United States of North America (thx for ref. Dad!!) and my dad with witty sense of humour (2 chapters - same book?) long ago for fun 'would do a 'typo saying ' the Untied States etc etc... HAPPY CANADA DAY TODAY TO US AND Happy INDEPENDENCE DAY to our North American southern 'states' LOL this Friday! Luv and 'unity' for the people, of the people, by the people (if wrong order ....sorry! ) PMC OUT! xox

This is a great Tabblo. I have been to Banff, I love Leonard Cohen, Second City TV, and most things Canadian, including the sweet boyfriend I had my Sr year in High School, Greg, from Montreal. I live in Colorado and the rocky mountains are in my back yard. Happy Canada Day, patty.
Pattymaryclare said at 10:22 p.m. on Jul 1, 2008:
Awwh Keener you're back! Means a lot to me. Yes, I thought of you a great deal when I decided on that shot of the Rockies taken on way to Banff and the perfect quote to go with. I've been to Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and many other beautiful states. Montreal too twice... (Dollard des Ormeaux. Pointe Claire, Old Montreal divine!!) We share a love of many things but most of all the ideation or pursuit of PEACE, each in our own way...kinda like our countries - same but different huh?....a love of Cohen,Banff, SCTV, all except for 'Greg' au Montreal (haha!). You just made my day even happier Pamela Keener; karmic on a tabblo and day that means so much to me. God bless you and everyone who's viewed and/or commented. luv, pmc
