Nepenthes carnivorous plant has evolved pitchers to trap and digest its prey for nutritional benefit. Its prey consist of small insects or animals which are which have strayed into the pitcher. The pitcher is able to digest the insects in a few hours. In Penang it is commonly called the monkey cup because monkeys like to drink rain water that has collected in the pitcher and they hold these pitchers like we hold cups.
