Chaitiamma said at 12:41 p.m. on Jul 7, 2008: Thanks everyone. Fo Dogs are actually lions, they are believed to be able to drive away devil. In China or most parts of South East Asia South, one can always sees the pair of Fo Dogs in front of official Chinese buildings like Palaces, temples and clan houses.
Upon entering, the one on the right is the male, as seen because he is holding a fulled-round-shape purse; in the ancient Chinese society, the men are supposed to be outside making a living to support the family. The female is on the left playing with the cub/cubs as women are expected to be at home tending the children and the households.
