There she was painted into the far corner of the room, secluded in her own space, far away from anybody else. Most of the time, she was laying there curled up in a ball. Her pace was so slow, too slow that she filled me with ennui. It seemed as if only when my back was turned that she started trudging her territory. This was her routine everyday. She was so beautiful! Her vivid blue and green dress eliminated her dark corner. She did no wrong to anyone, she was just there in her spot, so tranquil and peaceful. Until a bunch of rowdy people would ruin that peace and tranquility! They would come in and ask her for something. Being kind as she was, it was her pleasure to provide them with their needs. Not one day would pass that they didn’t come storming in, invading her space, and asking for more things until it became routine. She had felt used and irritated to a certain degree, but nevertheless, she kept this notion disclosed deep in her. She had put up with it for so long until one day, they crossed the line. They stormed into the room as usual, but this time a cloud of haze tailed them. One of them was smoking a cigarette, while the other would spray refreshener to coat the musty smell of the cigarette. The musty atmosphere had filled her to the brim, and destroyed that peace and tranquility she once had. She grew red and pulsated furiously, until she finally let out her wrath upon them. Who is she, you may ask? She is Mother Earth, and we are the people! We are the people who disturbed the peace and tranquility. Does that strike a bell? How about if I say Global Warming? *Ding* I thought so!

Global warming is a phenomenon of the new era. It is now became a sad reality. It has now become a black plague wiping out people day by day, slowly but surely, destroying mankind. What causes it? Why is global warming occurring? It is because of anthropogenic causes. It is because of us. We all contribute to this phenomenon, most of us unconsciously. We may not know, but in the small things we do, we are already contributing to something way bigger, too big that we can't fully grasp the seriousness involved. When somebody takes a cigarette break, or when somebody sprays their counter tops with cleaner, they are already contributing to this phenomenon. Most people think that small things like that don't matter, but in the end, it all accumalates, and it may be in that small action that this phenomenon be pushed over the edge. If we as a people, continually turn our backs to this problem and neglect its urgency, who knows what's in stake for mankind. Right now, we are already fronted with the early signs of global warming. Don't you find it very weird that we are now being made victims by so many catastrophical events as of late? Take typhoon Milenyo for example, I remember waking up to thunderous roars. I stirred for a moment, and tried to doze back to sleep. The roaring would just not let up, so I went out to see what was happening. It was just jaw dropping! I looked out into my once peaceful garden, and saw utter chaos. It looked as if it was a battlefield. All the trees were uprooted from the ground and layed piled on the ground. As soon as I snapped back to reality, the lights went out, and I saw darkness. Do you remember any typhoon in the span of your life being that bad? One of the causes of typhoon Milenyo was global warming. They just keep it coming. During what was supposed to be dry season, we are being wiped out by super typhoons? Don't you find it scary that the earthquakes that have been occurring have been off the charts tapping 7.2 and sometimes 7.4, and have been occurring more and more often? Let us not forget about the latest development, icebergs in the poles of the earth have almost completely disintegrated, leaving animals threading for their lives. These are just some of the early signs that it is showing. If we do not shape up, we have been warned of extreme weather events, sinificant precipitation, and sea levels to rise. Continuous precipitation as our city lies buried underneath. Sea levels will rise to uncharted levels, creating a gigantic sea poseidon to consume us. What is in store for the great mankind? Right now, we are so caught up with political and public debates, while this phenomenon keeps creeping towards us. It is now! It is a reality! It is a fact! It is an invonvenient truth! |
