There was a most interesting surprise at he capybara exhibit.  These animals are the largest rodents in the world weighing up to 130 pounds.  I had expected them to be slow, docile animals but they were running very quickly through the entire exhibit jumping in and out of the water several times.  It was difficult capturing these guys but I managed to get a great shot as they were moments away from hiting the water.

This sheep was found outside of the children's area called "My Backyard."  It was an area that had learning opportunities for the children with farm animals and ways to grow plants.  This sheep was very friendly and immediately came up to us to be pet.  He had very soft fur but was filthy.  There were plenty of sinks near by to wash up after petting.  It was a great learning experience for the children.

Here is the infamous spotted hyena we all remember from "The Lion King."  There were about three hyenas in the exhibit and they were all walking around like they were on the prowl, as they are carnivorous.  These animals are known for their laughter-like calls but we did not hear anything of the sort.

Here is a bird I am very familiar with.  The flamingo is a filter-feeding bird that eats brine shrimp.  These shrimp is what gives the flamingo their truely unique pink color.  This picture was taken while the birds were feeding.  They are always found in large groups, as they are very gregarious birds.

There were three turtoises on location at the San Antonio Zoo. These weren't just any other type but one of the largest in the world.  They are slow movers and didn't provide much entertainment.  We quickly moved on.

This is my wife's favorite bird, the lorikeet. These birds are in shockingly beautiful colors of all hues.  They have a program where you can feed them nectur for only one dollar.  They will come right up to you if they see the food and perch on your hand.  You must be careful though, they might bite!

As we were looking into this underwater exhibit we thought we were just looking at all of the brightly colored fish.  However, when we walked to one of the other windows we found some very huge hippos.  Hippos are found in Africa and are most closely related to whales.  Surely this can't be too shoocking once you see their size.
