Expressive and a bit sad faces..maybe its because they are not in the wild...

We put animals behind cages so we can empathize with them, and then when we look at them we are struck by the sadness and boredom we see in their eyes, and it's only then that we consider how very much they must be longing to be back in the wild. Unfortunate for them, this processing is something we humans need to do to value such creatures and the environments in which they live. It's just very sad that those behind the cages don't realize the sacrifices they are making....

Wonderful photos... you have caught their expressions well... I, too, get sad when seeing them in the zoo... even though they have an easy life there... there is no adventure...

These guys were raised in captivity though most likely...it's all they know...even though it's not much of a comfort~ I am always struck by the emotional eyes of the orangutan~~~The gorilla reminds me of "BOBO" the famous gorilla from the Seattle Zoo - he was raised by a family in Anacortes. My brother remembers taking guitar lessons from Bobo's human mom" and he saw Bobo there at the house as a "kid".

There is a lot of boredom and nostalgia in their eyes. Poor fellows! Great portraits though!

Terrific close-ups. I won't get into the captivity side. I'm just glad that at least nowadays most zoos give the animals more room. When I was a kid, everything seemed to be kept in small cages, & the conservation side was lacking. I truly believe that most of the keepers really care for the animals they look after.
