Eles, os botos / The pink dolphins

The Amazon River dolphins, (also known as pink dolphins or botos)

are born grey and become pinker with age.

Some people believe the dolphins to be magical beings that used to be human.

Other believe the dolphins are symbols of evil.

Some people believe that after sunset, the dolphins come out of the water, take human form, and have parties. When a single woman gets pregnant people usually blame it on the boto...

The pink dolphins are in serious danger of extinction.

They are hunt for their eyes and teeth, which are supposed to have magical powers.

Their testicles are considered a powerful aphrodisiac.

These pink dolphins live by Novo Airão.

They are known by their names, and behave like pets. They reminded me of my dogs...

beautiful creatures :)

Thank you for bringing us along on your trip, Eduardo. I appreciate your information and as always, your photos are wonderful. The dolphins are so cute but may favourite pic is #5. You really caught the little boy's excitement in his eyes.

They are so cool. I love the interesting commentary.
Eduardo.affonso said at 4:48 a.m. on Dec 6, 2006:
Yes, JASON, they are all beautiful: dolphins & kids!
Eduardo.affonso said at 4:50 a.m. on Dec 6, 2006:
Wish I could have taken all of you tabbloers with me, PAM. That would be a great photo safari. This little kid was really cute - he had a weird name that I had never heard before (and can't remember, of course).

JILL: There are so many legends in this region it would take a lot of time to tell some of them. The Portuguese title of this tabblo ("Eles, os botos" = They, the pink dolphins) is a reference to a famous Brazilian movie that depicted one of these legends involving these lovely creatures.
Eduardo.affonso said at 4:53 a.m. on Dec 6, 2006:
Ok, LILIANA, primeiro vou mandar o poema em segredo. Depois de uma tradução para o Castelhano, quem sabe eu me arisque a publicá-lo por aqui.
Mthorne said at 9:20 a.m. on Dec 6, 2006:
I love the story behind these creatures. These are great shots. I love your layout too. the long narrow shot of the girl and dolphin is very nice.
Eduardo.affonso said at 3:37 p.m. on Dec 6, 2006:
MELISA: Making tabblos is not like riding a bike - after ten days "offline" it was hard for me to decide what to do with the pics, which template to use, background color and so on. Guess it will take some time until I'm am used to all these tools again.
Nmat said at 5:30 p.m. on Dec 6, 2006:
These are great, Eduardo. Interesting narrative, also. I kew about the pink dolphins, but not their legends. Tabblo changed a bunch of things while you were gone, and we are all still kind of strange with the new setup (speaking for myself).
Eduardo.affonso said at 5:58 p.m. on Dec 6, 2006:
NANCY: I felt like a stranger here when I logged in again, after my short vacations. There are a lot of new people, new features, new ways, new tools. Still don't know if these changes are good or not - but I guess the Tabblo crew is working to make it better and better.
ElZorroTOX said at 6:22 p.m. on Dec 6, 2006:
Wow Eduardo these are awesome...as to them being responsible for single women's pregnancies...well I guess I've heard it all now ;-)
Siagian said at 6:48 p.m. on Dec 6, 2006:
i absolutely love dolphins! great photos!
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:53 p.m. on Dec 6, 2006:
Pink dolphis are supposed to be great lovers because of their falic noses, ZORRO. I would feel irresistible, too, if I had a nose like theirs!
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:54 p.m. on Dec 6, 2006:
Thanks, WOODY. Dolphins (along with the labradors, of course) are the most "lovagle" creatures in the world.

Eduardo, how wonderful it must have been for you to see these great dolphins! I wish I could be there.
Cruising said at 9:54 a.m. on Dec 7, 2006:
Exquisite!
Hilah said at 11:34 a.m. on Dec 7, 2006:
The dolphins are beautiful. They look great with those long noses, but I think you might look a little out of porportion if your nose was that long. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we humans could learn to cohabitate with the animal world intead of destroying them.
DEE-Trow said at 1:09 p.m. on Dec 7, 2006:
Eduardo, I never knew these pink dolphins even existed. I would love to be able to get that close. You were lucky to be able to take these great pictures. It looks like you had a fabulous trip.
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:25 p.m. on Dec 7, 2006:
MEI SHOO: If you want to learn more about these fascinating creatures you will find much more useful information on the internet. Just google "pink dolphin" or "boto". There are not many dolphins living in sweet water, and I think the Amazonian ones are the only ones with pink skin.
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:26 p.m. on Dec 7, 2006:
MONICA: Next time you take vacations just forget about Bermuda and think of Brazil!
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:27 p.m. on Dec 7, 2006:
BOB: Yes, they are exquisite - and fascinating.
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:34 p.m. on Dec 7, 2006:
ELIZZY: French scientist Jacques Cousteau spent some time in the Amazon and I think he is responsible to alert us about the risk of extinction of this species. Dolphin hunting is forbidden, now and they can be seen here and there, gracefully jumping out of water. I agree that such nose would make me look like a Cyrano de Bergerac - but I'm sure everybody would notice me...
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:37 p.m. on Dec 7, 2006:
Yes, DEE, it was a great trip. Not many people have heard of this species of dolphins. I suggest you to google "pink dolphin" and you'll get lots of information. For example: there are pink dolphins in China, too, but Chinese call them "white dolphins"...
Pkeener said at 12:47 a.m. on Dec 8, 2006:
Hmmmm... Great lovers AND adorable. What's not to like...;-)
Chiloedream said at 12:18 p.m. on Dec 8, 2006:
Eduardo, tu nous comble avec ces belles images. Ce tabblo est étonnant et captivant, un grand bravo et merci. Amitiés.
DEE-Trow said at 4:28 p.m. on Dec 8, 2006:
I will check out information on these dolphins. I'm curious now that you brought them to our attention.
Eduardo.affonso said at 7:16 p.m. on Dec 8, 2006:
Of course they are great lovers and adorable, PAM. They are Brazilians, aren't they?? :)
Eduardo.affonso said at 7:19 p.m. on Dec 8, 2006:
This trip was full of new images, new sensations every time, THIERRY. Seeing the pink dolphins was like going back to my childhood, when all I wished was to have a dolphin like Flipper at home.
Eduardo.affonso said at 7:21 p.m. on Dec 8, 2006:
You'll surprised with what you might found, DEE. There are so many legends and tales conected to the dolphins that you'll become an expert in Brazilian culture...
Pkeener said at 1:46 a.m. on Dec 10, 2006:
Oh, but of course, how silly of me to forget that these dolphins Brazilians! And...Lost in Space AND Flipper?!! You are a lost cause, I am afraid. ;-)
Eduardo.affonso said at 8:39 a.m. on Dec 10, 2006:
PAM: Not to mention that I also dreamt of Rin Tin Tin - and of Jeannie, of course!
Tanyaspix said at 11:41 a.m. on Jan 12, 2007:
Great shots from your vacation Eduardo! How funny because I was just doing some research on Pink Dolphins not too long ago. I should have just come to you and asked. :)
Eduardo.affonso said at 4:07 p.m. on Jan 12, 2007:
I'm not an expert, TANYA, but I got very involved with them - specially because soon after I arrived from the Amazon I read that Chinese white dolphins were considered extinguished... Next time you have to ressearch something quite unusual, please contact me!
Robya said at 10:57 p.m. on Feb 10, 2009:
Eduardo, This is very special to see dolphins, Such a wonderful Sea Animal. They always seem like they are smilings. Thank you for sharing this and all your wonderful Tabblos photographs. ~~Robbi
Eduardo.affonso said at 3:31 p.m. on Feb 11, 2009:
These pink dolphins, unlike their more famous cousins, live in sweet waters (rivers and lakes of the rain forest), and are an endangered species. They are really clever and friendly, and seem to be smiling (I think dolphins are the underwater labradors... :-)
