Welshchick said at 4:59 p.m. on Aug 18, 2008: Thank you Celia, Jodi, Linda, Doreen, Tianna, Yonder, Emma and Kay~~ Yes, we are astounded at the family of hawks that has moved in...right into the city...they are unmistakeable and wonderful~ The eyes are incredible! Emma, is it almost time for Blackberry cobbler? :^)
Debdog said at 9:27 p.m. on Aug 18, 2008: love this...love the last shot, and is that a re taii hawk>>>??????and blackberries,ALL so pretty ;0
Welshchick said at 10:46 p.m. on Aug 18, 2008: Hi Deb~ I've been checking my "Birds of North America" field guide...it's hard to tell what kind he is...he could be a young falcon. There are two of them and believe me, the crows in the area are having a Screaming fit! If anyone knows their birds please let me know what you think! Thanks Deb!
21-gramm said at 5:41 a.m. on Aug 19, 2008: it`s not a tabblo, it`s fairy tale! Well done, Rhonda! I take this kiss ;*)
Memotions said at 8:45 a.m. on Aug 19, 2008: Love the hawk Rhonda! Was that a surprise gift or does he visit your garden fence often?
Welshchick said at 12:13 p.m. on Aug 19, 2008: :^) Thank you Den~ If Life can be a Fairytale...then I want to be a fairy! Do you notice the stunning eyes on the hawk? He is so beautiful~~
Welshchick said at 12:21 p.m. on Aug 19, 2008: Hi Patty- I first noticed these two hawks in early July when I heard a different voice in my garden~ I could see that it wasn't a regular client :^) We took our binoculars and were amazed but a bit concerned...my neighbors have a tiny toy poodle and we have the "supreme sausage, Princess Lucy" who is only about 10 lbs - these hawks are not little guys either. They live in a Douglas fir tree just across the road and I imagine they find little mice or...gulp my birdie friends for lunch...there are dozens of the tiniest sweet finches all around...This is where I trust the Head Gardener~
Debdog said at 4:30 p.m. on Aug 19, 2008: i am 99% sure it is a red tail hawk i have one here too :)
Pkeener said at 7:58 p.m. on Aug 19, 2008: lovely. colors and format make this like a story book.
ConnieL said at 9:02 p.m. on Aug 19, 2008: Wow, so much beauty! You have a very pleasant garden. Your new visitor is lovely. The blackberries in our area of the country are through...at least the wild ones are. Beautiful tabblo, my friend!
Welshchick said at 5:19 a.m. on Aug 20, 2008: Wow, a red tail huh? Awesome~ I wonder what enticed him and her to our neighborhood~ I hope he stays safe!- I wonder if they're nesting...??? Thanks Deb
Welshchick said at 5:21 a.m. on Aug 20, 2008: Thank you Pam~ you know I don't travel much beyond my garden at this time of my life (working alot!) but there's aways something cool coming my way to take pics of~ Hugs!
Welshchick said at 5:24 a.m. on Aug 20, 2008: Aren't his markings just gorgeous Connie? Since he's in my yard do I get to claim him as my "pet hawk"? :^D Thank you and I'll bet you know what kind he is too~ you being a farmer's daughter...
Lifequest22 said at 10:15 a.m. on Aug 20, 2008: I don't think it's a red-tailed hawk as ithis one has the barred breast and head. It might be an immature Swainson's hawk which has the breast striping. But it's hard to tell since there are so many morphed varieties of hawks. and it helps in identifying if you can see the underwings in flight. but any pet yard hawk is great.
Welshchick said at 2:34 p.m. on Aug 20, 2008: Hi Linda, we sure do want to know what kind they are. They just came out of nowhere! Could he be an immature red-tail? There is a whole site dedicated to red-tail hawks in Portland...as you said it could be a mixture- I'll get some more photos of him and make a tabblo on what I see~ Thanks so much for you expertise - in the book they all look alike~
ConnieL said at 6:35 p.m. on Aug 20, 2008: Rhonda, after doing some checking...bird book in hand and Google, of course. I think you have a juvenile Cooper's Hawk. Check this link:
ConnieL said at 6:37 p.m. on Aug 20, 2008: And, yes, his markings are just gorgeous!! What a wonderful addition to your lovely yard.
Welshchick said at 3:43 a.m. on Aug 21, 2008: IT'S HIM! IT'S HIM!!! No doubt about it! Connie, You are goooooood! You win the prize of a FRESH MOUSE! (Alive of course! Just to be your pet!) hee hee This is an exciting discovery! Thank you so much!
Lifequest22 said at 12:09 p.m. on Aug 21, 2008: Good job Connie. Mystery solved. In my Peterson's Guide, the immature Swainson's and Cooper's Hawks looked identical. So i wasn't sure which one it was. And Connie, Thanks for the link. I've bookmarked the site which has some good links to other birding sites too.
Welshchick said at 3:37 p.m. on Aug 21, 2008: Now...Linda and Connie...I don't suppose we can persuade these guys to become vegetarian can we? They are looking pretty well fed and smug...
ConnieL said at 9:03 p.m. on Aug 21, 2008: Glad I could help! Now what would I do with a FRESH MOUSE...my cats would enjoy it. :-)))) I think your visitor would probably enjoy one as well.
Linda, you are welcome. I hadn't checked beyond the Cooper's Hawk, so didn't realize there were other links...thanks for mentioning it. I need to bookmark it as well, as I enjoy checking out the birds around here.
Wahoogin said at 9:25 a.m. on Aug 22, 2008: Wow, love the details of the colors!
Hollyridger said at 12:26 a.m. on Aug 23, 2008: Rhonda, your wonderful garden photos are inspiring me to do some serious gardening. I have a beautiful garden that very much looks after itself but I know it could be even more beautiful if I spent more time in it. Just recently I too spotted a hawk, a Cooper's hawk that I discovered when I uploaded the photo was banded on both legs. What a thrill! I reported it to the local Cooper's hawk guru and am looking forward to some feedback. Btw, I love the title of this tabblo. Hugs for Lucy!
Welshchick said at 3:51 a.m. on Aug 23, 2008: Thanks Ginny~ You are an inspiration to me! Dear Noreen- it's the watering that takes most of the time as you know...this weekend I will dead head all of the roses and fertilize fo keep them coming- It's truly labor ofl ove though~ I get such a high from being with all of those flowers! Can't wait to see your plans! Hugs

Debdog said at 11:42 a.m. on Aug 25, 2008: so it is a Swainson's???? they look so alike, but any hawk is cool to visit your yard, as long as they don't eat anybody!!!
Debdog said at 11:45 a.m. on Aug 25, 2008: so it is a cooper??? they look so alike!!!!! cool to have them visit...:) as long as they don't eat anyone....
Welshchick said at 2:57 p.m. on Aug 25, 2008: Ha Deb...the comment thing has been happening to me too~ I love the double comment though - it's a keeper :^D U R CUTE!
