Great shots! How did you hold the camera steady while that nasty wasp was buzzing around. Well done in taking these action shots which are very hard to get.

Those wasps can be quite aggressive. They chase the Hummingbirds away from two of my feeders as well, but today was the first time I had seen one go after a butterfly. Most intriguing to watch.

WOW... what a capture!!! Doesn't that wasp know there are laws protecting the monarch?? ;)
Jigs said at 12:18 a.m. on Aug 19, 2008:
Oh wow, that little wasp really looks like a villain! That fearless and aggressive pose, the way it stretches out its legs in attack mode, a fierce usurper to the Monarch's throne — I'd be so intimidated if I were that gentle butterfly! Amazing captures, Patty! Gosh, weren't you scared the wasp would turn on you???

Please tell that Wasp to watch his mouth - I can imagine what he is saying to that gentle buttefly! Hmmm...I wonder if the "King" would ever just give him a nice thunk with those wings...?

The wasps have never made me nervous. I let them do what they wish and never get closer than about 2 feet away, just so they have lots of space. It was pretty windy too, so the flowers were swaying in the breeze, but I couldn't stop myself from watching the dangerous dance between these two. It is absolutely captivating. Many thanks for the kind comments.

Wasps actually lay their eggs in the larvae of the Monarch (caterpillar) so there may be some connection??????
