The Eraserheads Reunion Concert

Thousands of Filipinos will mark August 30 as a historic event--the Eraserheads, whom majority of this generation regard as the greatest Filipino band, reunited for one night to perform their hits. The event itself is a phenomenon--what started as a rumor around a month ago slowly became real as numerous online communities spread the word the the members of the Eraserheads would reconcile for the most momentous musical event of the year. The details, believe it or not, was only finalized last Wednesday--yes, merely three days ago--the tickets were sold just last Thursday--the very same day I bought mine--and the following day, the rumors had it that the concert was sold out.

I am extremely lucky to have a sister who has a friend who has another friend who works in MTv, who eventually gave me and my sister SVIP (Super VIP) passes. So, we were able to locate ourselves at the very center/front of the stage. Unfortunately, DSLR cameras are forbidden in our area. Good thing, I was able to hide our cams under my extra shirt in my large bag. And call it fate, my newly acquired Sony Ericsson K850i became my savior. All of these pictures are taken using the said phone.

People started to cheer when a countdown clock was flashed into the screen. Fans were hysterically screaming as they wait for the longest 10 minutes in their lives. Then it happened. Pictures of the band members were flashed in the screen--then the stage slowly began to rise--dramatically, the members were being elevated to the stage, like a slow-motion popping bread from a defunct toaster. The crowd roared as the familiar notes of "Alapaap" was being played. Everyone sang with Ely, Buddy, Marcus and Raimund. The videos being shown behind the members, the fireworks, the superb strobes of lights made put everyone into a trance. Everyone was singing. It was magical.

Here's a video of the introduction of the concert.

nice blog. the pics make it so alive. well, i didnt watch the concert pero i was shocked when i learned that the gig was cut short because ely had a problem breathing. i was also so sorry for him since he had to continue the gig inspite of her mom's passing away. how ironic, this should have been an awesome for ely and the rest of the e-heads, and the 20,000 die-hard fans. too bad. well, at least they were able to play a few songs before the thing happened. rock!

Charms, the crowd was really great. Fun crowd! In fact, best crowd I've seen!!!! Yung mga die-hard fans talaga ang bumili ng mga tickets because they were considerably expensive. But the crowd was really great--so gracious even after the announcement that Ely had an attack.

MY GOD! LAST NIGHT'S CONCERT WAS IS BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN!
I have been to every concert, foreign and local for the past 25 years. The show last night is simply the best!

I thought Sting's concert in Manila years ago was on top of my list (better than michael's jackson's), but the REUNION is simply the most awesome by far. Greatest lighting effects and everything was in sync with the songs! Galing!

I agree with Sirnicolay, the crowd is most well behaved and enthusiastic crowd i have ever been with. Kudos to the sound system to that we in the 1,300 section heard every strum clearly.

During the break i was still in disbelief with what i had just witnessed. The look of the show was so good. The pictures here shows it.

To Ely, i know we know you will pull through. To Buddy, Raymond and Marcus, thank you for giving is the greatest show in Philippine history! We love you guys!

WoW! James thanks sooo much for this. You made me see the glimpse of the concert i longed dream which had finally come true. If I were only in the country, I would have made sure to see that concert...sigh...How i really wish I was part of this history!

Let's all pray for Ely's soonest recovery from his health problem and especially from the loss of his mom.

I disagree...sa mga tao na hindi nakapanood which were able to watch it on the net..The Eraserheads once again made MILLIONS of filipinos happy at the same time proud..

This is history..I congratulate the photographer of this blog for keeping the Most Memorable Night of the Philippine's music industry YET.

Wish for Ely to get well soon....and sana this concert would be repeated since it was cut short..

And if that time would come..I assure d ko na palalampasin ang event..nagdalawang isip lang kasi ako kasi sabi d na daw 2loy dahil sa sigarilyo...(what an issue)..

i'm a fan of The Eraserheads, the best Band of the Entire Philippine Archipelago, since I was 5-year old boy.. Sana hindi to ang last time that I would see you four together..

To Ely,Marcus,Buddy and Raymond sana ibalik nyu na lang ang Eheads for good..kahit papatak patak na gigs lang..

I've just uploaded two more videos from the performances last night.

Disclaimer: Hindi ako yung sintunadong kumakanta sa video. LOL. I'm sorry for the audio quality of this video. The quality is a bit crude but I guess it's still a good video to watch. :) Sorry, I'm really biased with these two songs, that's why i chose to record them. I did not record the full songs because I was afraid to drain my phone's battery. Anyway, just look at those lights and the background screens!

I just wrote a blog entry on the Eraserheads experience. You may see the original entry here:
http://sirnicolay.multiply.com/journal/item/65/Hangoverdrive_

***

Hangover(drive)

I cannot verbalize adequately how the Eraserheads has affected my life. Writing about their influence in my life is like being forced to paraphrase a poem written on a recently rediscovered diary--the overflow of the emotions and memories coming back just cannot be contained properly. I guess I might be alone in this situation. Up to now, two days after the concert, I still have a hangover. It's like experiencing the best drinking session ever with a hangover which does not end--which, if I could, I would not ever want to. The recently cut-short reunion concert of the Eraserheads was like a memento-Pandora's box. It made me hopelessly nostalgic.

I was in first year high school when I first saw them perform live in San Fernando Convention Center. Even up to now, I cannot forget the very first song they performed in that event; a guitar strumming and the words, "It's time to free your mind... It's time to cleanse your soul" made me and the anonymous hundreds of fans go berserk, singing the "Butterscotch" with Ely, Marcus, Raimund, and Buddy. The following year, I was among the very first customers in line queueing for their third album Cutterpillow. It did not take me a week to memorize all of their songs. Even when they released their advanced LP Fruitcake and their Christmas story book of the same title, I had to be one of the first many customers to buy them. In my senior year, their popularity was slowly waning with the rise of bands who sang revivals and mellow music--but still, I remained one of their hugest fans. Every year of my high school was marked by an Eraserheads album. I knew all of their songs. Play some random 3-5 seconds of any of their songs during this year, I could immediately name it. They made me love OPM. They made me proud of being a Filipino.

Almost every place in the University of the Philippines reminded me of an Eraserheads song. The dormitories remind me of "Minsan" (Minsan sa may Kalayaan...), the cafeterias made me think of "Shirley," the ROTC played the song "Yoko" in my head, my classes made me look forward to listening to "Sembreak," a girl gave meaning to "With a Smile," the sunken garden, even up to now, always makes me sing "Alapaap," and even the simple act of going back to the province from my boarding house reminded me of "Waiting for the Bus." It was like living in a film with a soundtrack and musical already prepared for my college life.

In my early twenties, my musical taste for the Eraserheads grew. Gradually, I began to appreciate their less-known albums. I honestly think that their second-to-the-last album Natin-99 is too advanced during the time of its release. Try listening to this album today, and you would be surprised how the Eraserheads had already "achieved" the musicality of the contemporary songs of today. Their songs slowly became more poetic and their music more complex. They reinvented themselves. I predict that in the next few years, people will see their last recorded album Carbon Stereoxide in a different light. Only time will reveal the importance of these musical prophets.

In my first year of teaching in Xavier, I was more vocal and obvious in showing my fondness for the band. In the class of 3F (2004), I sang "Wishing Wells" in the classroom as pre-lecture to my discussion of "The Little Prince." In the one-act play contest during that year, I sang "Shake Yer Head" during the intermission. Whenever I could, I would play the song during the Scrabble Club games in the last few years. Last year, I played some of their songs as my sophomore classes made their portfolio entries. At least I've been happy to hear that these guys still know the Eraserheads--when the names of formerly popular bands, Yano, After Image, Introvoys do not ring any bells for them. I realize that's how influential the Eheads has been that their songs still are being recognized by the youth today. Even though only a few students witnessed the concert last Saturday, at least I am glad to know that they recognize the event as important.

As much as I wanted to make everyone give a damn about the concert, I thought that they might not be able to relate with me--how these four regular Filipino musicians mean to me.

Thursday last week, some teacher saw how exasperated I was during noontime because I was having a hard time purchasing tickets online. Good thing, Mr. Asis volunteered to get me tickets because his friend also was buying some during that time. The following day when I got my ticket, I was overjoyed that I took pictures of the ticket and posted a shot in my blog. That same afternoon, my sister told me that she got VIP passes to the concert. We found out on the concert day itself that we actually got SVIP passes for ourselves. I felt that the universe was conspiring for us. Even though the DSLR cameras were prohibited in the event, I was lucky enough to have my phone with 5MP feature--again what a coincidence that I lost my phone a week ago which made me get this camera phone. And what a great, great opportunity to be in front of the concert, just merely 15 feet away from the stage, without anyone blocking my view of my musical idols.

Being in the venue was already a cathartic experience--but experiencing the Eraserheads again for fifty minutes made me re-experience fifteen years of my life. They sang fifteen songs about my aspirations, dreams, failures, love lives, and even plain trivialities. The darkness of the yesteryears have been erased and marked with new memories. The tune will play on longer in my head.

Saturday, many people have already told me that they saw me among the screaming crowd in front of the stage. They remarked how ecstatic I looked on the screen. My private moments of being joyful with the music of the Eraserheads was seen by thousands. How do I feel about that? I feel like just shaking my head and going away--with a smile on my face. It's just one of those inexplicable moments--like being in love while the rest of the world isn't. People can see your joy but they will never ever understand exactly.

Meanwhile, as of this moment, in less than 48 hours of being posted, my tabblo on the Eraserheads Reunion Concert is about to reach 1,500 hits, while the youtube video I uploaded has already been seen by more than 6,200 people.

I guess I am not alone in this Eraserheads hangover.

Just an hour ago, I made a new playlist in my iPod. I put the repertoire of the Reunion Concert in this list--the fifteen songs which the Eraserheads played in chronological order as they were performed in the concert--heck, I even put the hypothetical second set. As I am writing this blog entry, twenty-one of the thirty songs have already been played. There's still much more time to listen to the rest of the songs. My night has just been set.

The concert has never ended.

You are definitely not alone! This may sound narcissistic but i could relate to just about everything you wrote here, the UP thing etc. Had goosebumps the whole time looking at the pics. Your photos were the only well-taken shots i could find on the net so soon after the concert. I felt like I was there, i had to comment. Thanks so very much!

thank you thank you dear everybody before anything. i just spoke to day cabuhat. and she informed me that ely's condition is now stable. and they're very thankful for all your concern. thank you very much for coming t the show. we really felt the cheering and the singing and the love you all gave. thank you for understanding that the show had to be cut short. ely was in no condition (emotionally, physically) to play but he did. and he gave it his all which is more than we could ask from him. given the circumstances he was in. we all wish him well. we are all confident that he will recover soon. i promise to give you another eraserheads show as soon as possible. again thank you very much raym

*raym as in Raymund Marasigan in case anyone was wondering (but i have a feeling it's just me, duh.) I wanted to share this with another enthusiastic e-heads fan. Woot! Ok, deep breaths... ;)

Great photos, sayang I wasn't there. Di bale, I also experienced that sort of magic (to a lesser degree perhaps) when Ely was in Sydney last June for a 1 night concert and though the other guys we're not there, it was purely an E-heads night. He also opened the show with "Alapaap" (the videos are also in youtube). It was a very emotional night, I watched Ely perform one e-heads song after another with a lump in my throat. The songs brought back a lot of good memories from my UP days. Sana next time nandyan nako to experience the magic firsthand. Cheers Eheads!!

Lucia, thank you so much for that info! w00t! I'm so excited to watch their follow-up concert! :)

Marci, thank you!

Alapaap, Eheads for life! w00t!

Supmom, I actually saw the youtube videos of those performances last June. I think that was also the time when the rumor that the Eraserheads are reuniting started spreading in the web. Who would have thought that it would come true. :) Anyway, thank you very much for dropping by. :)

I got another inside info from a blog.

2nd Set of the Eraserheads Reunion Concert
Thursday, September 4th, 2008
from: http://www.alegre.ph/portal/tag/raimund-marasigan/

We were all supposed to dance the Huling El Bimbo with a fantastic fireworks display. It was going to be the perfect song to end a perfect concert.

I know this thanks to someone from the inside. A day after the concert our source talked about what was supposed to go down during the Eheads concert.

The first set went exactly as planned, except of course for Ely’s collapse. To refresh your memory, these are the songs we heard:

1. Alapaap
2. Ligaya
3. Sembreak
4. Hey Jay
5. Harana
6. Fruitcake
7. Toyang
8. Kama Supra
9. Kailan
10. Wag Kang Matakot
11. Kaliwete
12. With A Smile
13. Shake Yer Head
14. Wag Mo Nang Itanong
15. Lightyears

During the second set, the band was to sing ten more songs, in this order:

1. Maskara
2. Poor Man’s Grave
3. Torpedo
4. Trip to Jerusalem
5. Back To Me
6. walang Nagbago
7. Maling Akala
8. Tikman
9. Spoliarium
10.Magasin

When Magasin was to be played, the screen behind them would have montages of various news and magazine clippings of them. It would flash alternately with shots of the band and audience until the song reached the coda where Ely sings “…ay centerfold ka naaaa…woo hoo-hoo, haaa-haaa” part of the song. Then there would be fire works and a fountain of sparks, going on til the last note of the song. Then the hydraulic stage would be lowered and the band would make a “fake ending”.

The lights would then go out.

The source said the band would wait til the crowd chanted “more”. “It would take two beers’ worth of chanting. Then in the darkness, a very dramatic keyboard solo would be heard, and it would be the opening chords of Para Sa Masa.

The hydraulic stage would rise again and there they would be.

After Para Sa Masa, they’d switch into Overdrive. With the crowd pumped within an inch of insanity they were to hit us with Pare Ko. And then we would slow down and reminisce with Minsan.

Finally, they would perform Huling El Bimbo. Again, after the last refrain, at the coda (la la la laaa…) the grand fireworks display would go off, fountains of light surrounding the stage. The next la-la-la parts would see fireworks from behind the general admissions section, and as the song ended there would be a burst of confetti all over the audience.

Then the hydraulic stage would be lowered for the final exit.

Those were the plans for the Ultraelectromagnetic night. It may not have happened as planned but at least we knew they were going to give us a show we would never forget!

We our source if the band knew about all these plans. They did. In fact they were so excited about all the gimmicks and couldn’t wait to party with the audience. “Nag-usap pa nga sila kung may mga kailangang saluhin na kanta just in case (di na kaya ni Ely),” the source said. “And Ely said, hindi, Kakanta ako!”

I’m putting out an order to the Universe that we all get to watch the second set!

Reposted this from the Circus Yahoo! Groups. Orginal source was unclear.
