A Kempf Kinetic Sculpture

This kinetic sculpture is located in downtown Colorado Springs in a courtyard of the Plaza of the Rockies, the building behind it. While it resembles a clock, which many think it is at first sight, the two longer arms rotate on pivots from the wind.

This is a steel structure created by Starr Kempf; he made many of these wind sculptures which he called "monumentals" and had them all over his large front yard. His neighbors hated them because it created traffic congestion in their residential area.

Mr. Kempf died by his own hand in 1995 having never sold any of his many forms of art, apparently out of fear of negative reviews. This particular one, my favorite of those I've seen, was given or sold for display in this courtyard by his family.

A video of the arms moving is here.

Addendum: My son sent me this URL of a wonderful website about Kempf's sculptures: http://www.newsblab.com/starrkempf/index.htm
