Iowa Barn Quilts
COMMENTS
YorkJodi said at 7:00 p.m. on Sep 4, 2008:
These are only a few of the many barns with quilts in Iowa... all photos taken along Hwy 20 about 1/3 way down from the Iowa / Minnesota border...

The 8' square quilt blocks are found on both barns & corn cribs over 50 years old.

I barely got Dan to "pause" along the route so I could take photos... which is why some are not too well composed and a bit blurry...

I challenge other Tabbloers to take photos of quilt barns in their areas...
If you go to http://www.barnquilts.com/links.html there are links to sites in other states...
Ohio & Tennessee have many more than Iowa has..

Wow!
I grew up in Iowa and had no idea they did this!
Is it only in certain sections of Iowa, do you happen to know?
Thanks for sharing!

These are really cool, Jodi! Are they handwoven and really designed to be put outside the buildings?

Never knew there is such a tradition like this, thanks
YorkJodi said at 9:24 a.m. on Sep 5, 2008:
They are just a quilt block design painted onto an 8' square of plywood... It is just to beautify & draw attention to the barns & corncribs in the county and as something to draw tourists to the area, I think. The idea originated in Adams County, Ohio... see: http://www.barnquilts.com/about.html
