10 FAVES FROM FIRST 100

The Tabblos above were made

(in chronological order) from

April 18 - June14, 2008

So far, this is my 141st tabblo.

Just a few more then I'll make

a part two to this.

:)

The Butterfly Fixation is my very first TOD--and I honestly think that it's one of the best tabblos I created. These pictures were taken last year around October in two different places. When I re-edited these pictures last summer, I thought that I did a great job in showing the stark colors of these flying flowers. I had fun making a strange layout here; thanks to google.com for the quotes I used here! (Click the titles to view the tabblos.)

Necrophilia was slightly an easy tabblo to make, but making the concept clear and not offensive was most challenging. At first, I made the tabblo viewable only by my circle here in tabblo; but because of the encouragement Joaqy and Noe, I agreed to show this to the public--the tabblo and the picture are definitely and delicately captured--no one would really be offended. The quote I featured here is from one of my most favorite books, "Written on the Body" by Jeanette Winterson. The paragraph is probably the most romantic and sensual passage I have ever read. The body is, indeed, a territory of love and emotions.

The Imitations of Christ , again a possibly offensive tabblo, prompted me to debate with myself whether the others would not be put off by the images of blood in the pictures. Hence, I put a really long introduction below the first few pictures of the tabblo.   This album is quite personal because the town where these penitents do their rituals is actually where I grew up. During Lenten season, every year, people flock to Pampanga to witness these poor men flagellate themselves in remembrance of Christ.

Zen and Construction is an experiment on contrasts and black and white, as well as the "flow" of how one views the tabblos. I thought that while a viewer scrolls the page, sometimes it's inevitable that one would think of real pages like in those in good ol' paper format. I tried to recreate that experience by stylizing the use of spaces in this tabblo.

I am... vain. Hahaha! The only way to rationalize (or excuse) my vanity is by writing a philosophical experiment on the theme of identity. I wrote: The phrase "I am" is deceiving. Who I am right now is not the person who I was a decade ago, a year ago, yesterday. Even when this fraction of second has just passed by, I have already changed. An older me exists by the millisecond. You view these pictures and say to yourself: Ah this IS SirNicolay/James. But the truth is, I am no longer the person in these portraits. By the time you read this, "I am" has already turned to "I was." I have moved on past your impression of me. In a long enough timeline, I will have lived zillions of moments, thousands and millions of portraits will be taken and yet not a single image will be ever accurate enough to accurately retain who I am from who I was. I should know. Even I cannot stop myself.

Water is definitely one of the simplest tabblos I've ever made. I love the simplicity and purity of the subject. I did a cute experiment with the placement of the pictures so that it would appear as if the water was flowing in the tabblo.

The Secrets of Siquijor Island always gives me the creeps. The pictures I took here will always inspire me to travel around the world soon. The fun thing about taking these pictures is that I literally stopped our vehicle just to take many of these pictures. The trip was extremely memorable, and the stories behind each picture are just priceless.

Lazi: Lazy, Local Life made me appreciate more the black and white treatment of pictures. I love the lazy atmosphere behind these pictures. These are also taken from my vacation in Siquijor Island.

Ward Six depressed a lot of people who viewed it. The pictures of sick children about to undergo operation would definitely the heart of anyone who views them. It's a good thing, though, because I'm sure those who viewed this tabblo prayed for the successful operation of these children.

The Scientist is  probably the most dramatic and most unique of all of my tabblos. It has a personal and special meaning for me because the tabblo features one of the most heartbreaking songs that figured in my life some time in the past. It's also special because the tabblo moved some tabbloers in ways that also surprised me. Even without the TOD attached to this tabblo, I still think that it's one of the most important work I created here..
