Iowa Wind Farm

Iowa ranks 3rd in the production of wind energy after California and Texas...

On our drive to Wisconsin last weekend, we came upon this Wind Farm along Hwy 20 between Sioux City and Sac City, Iowa.      Look closely at the horizon (above & below)... We saw 100's of giant windmills...

I'm posting a couple of photos just so you can get a perspective and see the size of the windmills...

4 times taller than a two story house or barn... 3 times taller than huge full grown elm & cottonwood trees...

The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects it to change, the realist adjusts the sails...

William Arthur Ward

Or in this case... builds a windmill to harness the power...

They are certainly useful but for me they make little weird sight in the landscape.Nice on- the road shots!

Huge and curious machines. Future Energy is important but I don't find them attractive for our landscapes.

Yes quite huge! We got' em here in Holland too!

They're like an infestation, cropping up everywhere. We may harness more energy....but the cost of it rockets up, never down.

Great shots. I am always fascinated when I see something like in perspective with normal size life.

True giants! The problem of having them in our landscapes or not is now all over the world, but........which is the worse way to have power ? and the best ?

Nice photos and tabblo, Jody! In Portugal we have a lot of this windmills all over the country but always on top of hills. They look like white forests growing and growing. :)

I know a bit about those things, running into truckers that haul them all over the place. Those are the new generation 1 megawatt turbines and they are indeed huge when assembled. I see them sprouting all over open range along I-70 and I-80, especially in the western half of Kansas and Nebraska where the winds are very consistent, and the ranchers and farmers out there seem to like the idea of being able to make a little extra money with wind power and not really affect their land for grazing herds or raising crops. In California, they're mainly found around mountain passes and divides, especially around Palm Springs, where they are seen for MILES. Environmentally conscious and now profitable as fossil fuels are becoming increasingly expensive and being mass produced so that anyone with a decent parcel of land and good winds around can get in on it. The midwest could become the power generation capital of the continent if this really catches on areas a little farther off the interstates. I'd LOVE to see that happen. Thanks for showing this really fast growing part and very important area of growth in your region of the country Jodi.

Beautiful pictures and nice presentation. We saw a lot of wind farms across Minnesota when we were driving I 90 from OR to NY. I have a friend who has a smaller wind farm in Central New York. People complain that they are ugly and ruin the landscape, but I think they are quite beautiful - sleek and majestic.
