Awesome Artist w. Autism- Mark Rimland

I PURCHASED ONE OF MY MOST !!! FAVORITE PRINTS OF MARK'S WHILE IN THE EL CAJON, CA  WORKSHOP/STORE - APRIL/'08.  HE WAS ACTUALLY IN THE BACK WORKING WITH OTHER AUTISTIC PERSONS SO MY FRIEND SECRETLY GOT HIM TO SIGN THE  ABOVE UBER-COOL STORYBOOK, A COLLABERATION BY SISTER AND BROTHER.  

  WHAT A WONDERFUL 'ART WALK' WE ALL HAD THAT DAY!  THIS GUY IS TRULY, AS THE BOOK SAYS ,,, A 'SAVANT ARTIST' , FAR BETTER THAN I COULD EVER HOPE TO BE !!   ~PMC

MARK RIMLAND WAS BORN WITH AUTISIM IN 1956 IN SAN DIEGO.  iN RESPONSE TO HIS SON'S DISABILITY IN A TIME WHEN RELATIVELY LITTLE WAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PERPLEXING SYNDROME, HIS FATHER, DR. BERNARD RIMLAND ESTABLISHED THE AUTISTM RESEARCH INSTITUTE.

 

MARK IS A 'SAVANT ARTIST'.  HE STUDIES ART PRIVATELY AND IN CLASSES AT A CENTER FOR DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED ADULTS IN EL CAJON, CALIFORNIA.  MARK'S WHIMSY, CONTOUR LINE  STYLE AND LOVE FOR ANIMALS IS VERY APPARENT IN HIS ARTWORK.  HE HAS APPEARED ON PBS -PEOPLE IN MOTION, CBS-THIS MORNING, CNN, NTV-ART TIME IN JAPAN. 

 

HIS ARTWORK IS DISPLAYED IN NUMEROUS GALLERIES, SHOWS AND PUBLICATIONS.

These are neat. Have you ever heard of Louis Wain? He was an artist around the turn of the century and was famous for painting and drawing cats. He developed schizophrenia, but continued to paint. It's very interesting to see his cats transform as his illness progressed. His later works are really psychedelic-looking. You would guess they were done in the 60s, but were in fact done in the early 1900s.
