Manaus - Cabaré do Chinelo

Eduardo, you take the best photos of architecture.
Eduardo.affonso said at 9:40 p.m. on Dec 8, 2006:
Thanks, NANCY. My eyes have been trained for that for a long time (I graduated as Architect 25 years ago!).

Beautiful Eduardo. Of course I don't understand what you wrote about these pictures but I can still enjoy the beauty of them. I love the angles you used to photograph the buildings. You are so good!

It's hard to believe that there was once such a rich and sophisticated city in the heart of the jungle, SHIRL. In its golden days Manaus was known as "Paris of the tropics" because of its fascinating Opera House (coming soon on a tabblo!), electricity (a novelty in South America) and the many cabarets, with beautiful prostitutes "imported" from France and Poland.

DEE: This is a paragraph taken from French newspaper L'Express and says, more or less (help me, Thierry!): "More than 100 ships made a queue on Rio Negro before being able to accost in Manaus, the city of the pleasures. They stopped initially in front of the island of Marapata, and a proverb said then: “Deposit your conscience on Marapata. You will take it back when you leave.”
The casinos were not missed in Manaus. Today, behind the Opera, the façade of a building: that's the remains of Cabaré do Chinelo, the Cabaret of the Sandal.“ It got this name during its decadence, when its clients were no longer elegant men, yet poor people wearing sandals instead of shoes.

JILL: Thanks, it's my pleasure to share what my "Architect eyes" see!
Eduardo.affonso said at 8:13 a.m. on Dec 10, 2006:
THIERRY: Can't wait to see the magnificent photos you'll take here. I'm sure you'll explore the beauties of Amazon region much better than I would ever do. I added the text in French specially for you.

Eduardo, these are wonderful. I love the shot the with the broken terrace.

Ton ami Thierry.

Eduardo, your eyes see such beautiful things and then you also make beautiful pictures so we may see what you see. DOES that make sense. :) Well done. :)
Jasontengco said at 7:17 a.m. on Dec 11, 2006:
that explains the fascination with architecture! :) because youre an architect! :)
Eduardo.affonso said at 8:38 a.m. on Dec 11, 2006:
Well, JASON, according to your theory, it should explain your fascination with children, too... :)
Eduardo.affonso said at 8:41 a.m. on Dec 11, 2006:
Thanks, MELISA, PAULA & THIERRY. I agree that we have similar ways to see the world and our tabblos reflect it - even when we have different points of view, our sensibility often drives us to the same aspects.
Mjpileggi said at 5:28 p.m. on Dec 11, 2006:
The colors remind me of some of the buildings in Venice. I can see now how you are able to compose your shots - being an architect has its benefits! You have the eyes and creativity to bring out the best in things.
Mdsf said at 2:13 p.m. on Dec 12, 2006:
Du,
These pic's are great, capturing the "atmosphere" of decadance after the "rubber cycle"!
Eduardo.affonso said at 4:19 p.m. on Dec 12, 2006:
You're right, MONICA: the faded colors are just like the same we can see in Venice. I'm afraid I was born with "architect eyes", always looking for the best angle to see things.
Eduardo.affonso said at 4:22 p.m. on Dec 12, 2006:
Decadence is the easiest thing to find in Manaus, MARIO, specially in this central area, close to the port & the market. There were also lots os prostitutes wandering around this building, but I didn't feel comfortable to take photos of them. Then you'd know what's decadence.
Pkeener said at 6:10 p.m. on Dec 12, 2006:
You are like Midas...you give the golden touch to everything you photograph.
Eduardo.affonso said at 7:50 p.m. on Dec 12, 2006:
Wow! Thanks, PAM - but remember that Midas starved until death because even the food he touched became gold (not to mention the golden girls, friends, dogs...)... :)
Engelgrafik said at 11:08 p.m. on Dec 12, 2006:
i think you should take pictures of the prostitutes. Maybe not their faces to protect their identity. But ask them if they could tell you about their lives and how they survive.
Eduardo.affonso said at 6:45 a.m. on Dec 13, 2006:
That's an old project of mine, JEFF. One of these days I was walking in a "not so recommended" part of the town and saw some prostitutes by the door of a decaying hotel. For a second I thought of inviting one of them for a photo session, black & white, with natural light and "true confessions". That would make a great tabblo, I'm sure. But she would probably call me "freak" or "pervert"... :) But I haven't given up yet!
Leica said at 10:58 a.m. on Dec 13, 2006:
seeing this tabblo makes me want to book a flight to brazil, pronto. thanks for sharing! anyway, i do hope you complete that project of yours -- would like to know how an architect eyes see them :)
Eduardo.affonso said at 11:25 a.m. on Dec 13, 2006:
Just wait a little bit, dear DANIELLE, and you'll see the project come true. I've seen some photos and videos of Manila and I think there are similar ruins around there (in fact they reminded me of Havana and downtonw Rio, too). Have you already booked your flight? I'll waiting for you at the airport!
