Mariana

Literally meaning "general mines", Minas Gerais

is an inland, east-central state that is widely renowned as the storehouse of Brazil's mineral resources.

The discovery of gold there in 1695, followed by that of diamonds some thirty-two years later, rekindled the Portuguese dream of unearthing colonial riches comparable to the ones discovered by Spain in Peru and Bolivia.

In this context, the historical, political and economical paramountcy of Mariana

is unrivalled.

Established in 1698, the mining settlement became the first village in Minas Gerais, on 8 April 1711, as well as the first city, on 23 April 1745, thereupon eponymously receiving its current denomination in honour of Maria Ana, queen of Portugal.

Mariana

was also the first capital and the seat of the earliest bishopric in Minas Gerais, created by Benedict XIV's bull of 6 December 1745.

The numerous churches erected in this early urban nucleus witnessed musical activity of a magnitude and excellence that paralleled the developments in architecture, painting, and literature in the region.

Mariana

se situe au

 Circuit de l’Or,

Like much of the architecture you show in your photos, these have things growing on their rooftops and in the crevices, giving the feel that with the passage of time, the weight of the wealth and attention has gone in different directions. I love the shot of the manor on roof, and the doll like quality of the king and queen (?) hearkens back to the theatrical nature of the towns past. A very nicely put together tab.
