Street Art Ancient and Modern

The Barri Gotic is the oldest part of Barcelona and dates back to medieval times.  Walking around this part of Barcelona I was fascinated by the beautiful tile plaques on the walls that my son said were in Catalan. Barcelona is central to the Catalan region of Spain.

Then we walked into another part of the Barri Gotic and we found some vibrant street art decorating shop front shutters.

Then of course no city is without its graffitti and this was evident on the buildings that are in process of demolition prior one assumes, to renovation that is going on everywhere in Barcelona.

I like a combination of ancient magnificence and modern art graffitti. They very different among themselves also create contrast. But is perfect, that they can be met in one place! Great cities, in which there is this combination and the people have freedom of self-expression. Remarkable photos and your job. Perfect self-expression:)

Thanks for the historic and colorful tour. Love the shot of the red and white bikes. I certainly hope that the renovations won't affect any of the gorgeous historic building. It must be fascinating to walk the areas of Medieval times.

Thank you all for your interest and kind words.
Linda, the red and white bikes are community bikes, for a small annual fee they are available troughout the city, just pick one up and leave it at another bike rack - brilliant!

Ceila--I thought they might be community bikes. We had some in Tampa that were orange and no fee. I think they were hoping people might use them instead of stealing cars or others' bikes. However, it wouldn't surprise me if some folks painted them and sold them. Call me a skeptic.

Oh I am so glad to hear they are community bikes! ... I was just imaging being one of the poor souls who had forgotten to count how many footsteps from the end they left their bike! ... seriously, I didn't think straight away why all of them looked the same. lol. Still a very cool shot! ... One of these days I'm going to get to walk though the side steets and alleys of such a place as this, but for now, it's tabblos like this that feed my curiosity. Thank you. :)

Wish I knew the language on the tile plaques; the one about Fra Gari and others look like they'd be interesting to read.
Chilla said at 2:45 a.m. on Oct 8, 2008:
Thanks Dar, I believe the plaques are written in Catalan. Barcelona is in the Cataluna region of Spain and has its own language.

Beautiful pics!!!! Chilla, the plaques are REALLY written in "catalán", it is not Spanish language, is language spoke in Cataluña, part of Spain (¡¡España!!).BTW, most of the graffitti are written in Spanish. It is interesting: both languages are alive, together.
